Description:

JOB SUMMARY  Collaborates with the surgeon and other members of the health care team in performing surgical procedures with optimal outcomes for the patient.  Performs observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) as delegated by the surgeon. Practices within boundaries set by state and federal regulation and/or licensure in a non-physician role.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

 

§  Assists in providing safe transfer and positioning of patents.

§  Assists in surgical case preparation (equipment, supplies, and instruments).

§  Collaborates with the surgeon to provide exposure of the field during operative procedure, handles tissue and uses instruments under the direction of the surgeon.

§  Demonstrates theory and skill of surgical asepsis by maintaining and assisting efficiently within the sterile field.

§  Anticipates and assists in providing hemostasis during operative procedures.

§  Performs closure of surgical incisions under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

§  Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing.

§  Provides assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.

§  Expedites the operative procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon.

§  Provides assistance in room preparation, turnover and clean-up.

§  As the patient advocate, notifies appropriate member of the health care team of observed condition or change in condition of the patient to provide continuity of patient care..

§  Demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology.

§  Demonstrates knowledge of emergency situations.

§  Demonstrates superior organization skills.

§  Demonstrates professional attitude.

§  Supports team communication and collaboration by providing feedback re: pick lists, process changes, etc

§  Participates in ongoing unit education.

§  Maintains knowledge through self-directed learning and participation in continuing education and research, to ensure professional growth.

§  Maintains accountability for individual learning needs and for updating knowledge and skills required to perform job functions

§  Completion of all mandatory competencies by due date and all employee health requirements by due dates.

§  May be required  to perform in the capacity of a Surgical technician

§  Performs other related duties as assigned.

§  Participates in unit based committees

§  Incorporates and demonstrates the mission, vision and values of St. Mary Mercy Hospital in behaviors, practices and decisions

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

 

A.              Education

                 Graduate of a Certified First Assistant (CFA) program accredited through the Accreditation Review Committee

                 Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program(CAAHEP).

 

B.              Licensure

 

·       Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. 

·       Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCC-ST)       

        • Certified First Assistant (CFA) certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) by the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA)

Ø  Good physical and mental health

Ø  Finger and hand dexterity to handle and manipulate instruments/equipment

Ø  Visual and aural acuity

Ø  Turning, stooping, stretching and lifting.  Lifting requires the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
