  • Location: Holy Cross Health has two hospitals and four healthcare centers all a short driving distance from Washington DC and Baltimore, MD 

Description:  

The Director provides expertise, quality control, and strict regulatory compliance by tracking and sterilizing surgical instruments to reduce the risk of infection, prevents the loss of instruments, ensures that trays are complete, and works to address the concerns of the surgeons regarding the availability of instruments for Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. The Director oversees operations, conducts in-service training, and works with perioperative services of leadership to find and implement efficiencies that provide on-time service delivery, reduce costs, and ensure patient safety.  Represents Holy Cross Hospital and Trinity Health in all professional contacts. 

 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Proven leadership ability with excellent organizational and communication skills including verbal and written communication, management, and problem solving and presentation skills. 

  • Superior analytical skills in the development and application of financial and managerial models for the control of material resources. 

  • Proficiency in the use of computer software programs to include Excel, Word, Power Point and Materials Management Applications systems as well as a working knowledge of automated information and financial systems relative to materials management operations  

  • Responsible for establishing departmental policies and procedures and adapting them as necessary to meet operational objectives 

  • Monitor their departmental results against budget, operational and strategic plans and determine how to improve performance against each. 

  • Effective cross-departmental cooperation and the ability to work with peers and senior management are essential for the director to obtain the necessary agreements and resources needed to meet both area specific and organizational objectives. 

  • Expected to oversee 24-hour operations of their specific areas, ensuring the successful day-to-day function of the area, policy and objectives communication to staff, and that operational processes are staffed and monitored appropriately to ensure that quality, customer service, and financial performance are maintained. 

  • Develops, reviews and recommends revision of policies and procedures for the Department that result in efficient and effective utilization of departmental resources.  

  • Provides counseling to include corrective action and termination of employees as required and in accordance with Hospital policies and procedures. 

  • Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with other departmental management and staff. 

  • Works closely with the OR leadership to ensure the scopes in the Endoscopy are processed per the federal guidelines, adhering to regulatory standards. 

  • Monitors staff closely to ensure they are following the appropriate vendor guideline when processing instrumentation. 

  • Establishes and maintains competency within the department to ensure instrumentation is being handled and processed to meet the sterile competency per the AORN standard. 

  • Prepares departmental expenses and capital budgets. 

  • Integrates departmental operations effectively and efficiently into delivery of care systems; develops a spirit of efficiency and cooperation with other departments within the system.   

  • Ensures that the department provides the necessary support to other departments and that departmental activities are appropriately aligned with other organizational initiatives. 

  • Reports to the Vice President, Perioperative Services 

 

What you will need: 

  • Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse or five years' experience in sterile processing environment. 

  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of sterile processing and current practice, Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards for sterile processing, AMII sterilization guidelines, Joint Commission Accreditation Health (JCAHO) and Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) compliance. 

  • Minimum five (5) years related clinical experience.  Minimum of three (3) years management experience in comparable area of an acute care setting is preferred. 

  • Current certification in Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or obtained within one year of hire.
