The Role + Purpose:

The Senior Designer for Washed Product reports into the Head of Women’s Denim Design and plays a key role in driving the creative vision and execution of Madewell’s washed-product categories. This role requires deep wash expertise and a strong understanding of fabric behavior, construction, and finishing techniques specific to washed materials. The Sr. Designer will lead seasonal concept development, guide wash innovation, and partner cross-functionally to ensure product delivers on brand aesthetics, quality, and commercial goals.

  • Establish and maintain cohesive creative direction for women’s washed product across all seasonal collections.
  • Manage both the creative and technical development of product within the overarching merchandise assortment strategy.
  • Conduct in-depth wash research and drive wash development that aligns with the Madewell brand DNA.
  • Research seasonal trends, themes, color, raw materials, and styling relevant to denim and washed product.
  • Collaborate closely with Merchandising, Production, and Technical Design to ensure design integrity and alignment with line plans and brand vision.
  • Lead fittings and partner with Technical Design to refine fit, construction, and wash outcomes.
  • Manage and mentor a team of designers, providing guidance, feedback, and support to drive creative excellence.
  • Create detailed design cards for first protos, including measurements, construction notes, and wash direction.
  • Develop and counter-source yarns, fabrics, and trims in partnership with Production and global suppliers.
  • Approve lab dips, fabric submits, and wash developments to maintain color accuracy and product quality.
  • Travel internationally for trade shows, mill appointments, design research, and to oversee product and wash development with vendors.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 8+ years of design experience, ideally with a focus on denim or washed-product categories.
  • Proven wash expertise, including knowledge of wash processes, finishing techniques, and material performance.
  • High taste level with strong creative ability and intuitive understanding of Madewell’s brand aesthetic.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, coach, and develop junior team members.
  • Strong working knowledge of garment construction, patternmaking, and fit.
  • Knowledge of fabric and yarn construction, including how materials respond to various wash processes.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and apply seasonal color, print, and silhouette trends.
  • Exceptional illustration and presentation skills; ability to clearly communicate design intent.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and written skills with meticulous attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and Excel.

Preferred:

  • BA in Fashion Design or related field.

Salary Range: $97,600.00 - $122,000.00

The base salary offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region of work premises, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.  The base salary is just one component of J.Crew Group’s competitive total rewards strategy that also includes the opportunity for bonus, competitive benefits and perks.
