Overview

Provides safe, accurate, and timely dispensing of specialty medications in accordance with prescriptions, clinical protocols, and regulatory requirements. Applies foundational clinical knowledge to review medication orders, identify potential therapy-related issues, and support patient understanding of specialty therapies.

Supports specialty pharmacy operations by collaborating with pharmacy technicians and care teams to ensure appropriate medication preparation, distribution, and documentation. Promotes medication safety, adherence, and patient access while ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and all applicable state and federal laws governing specialty pharmacy practice.



What you will do

  • Reviews, validates, and assesses patient specific medication orders. Monitors patient profiles to assure appropriate dosage and therapy. Reviews alerts associated with verification and escalates concerns to provider or pharmacy leadership as appropriate.
  • Supervises and performs compounding (both sterile and non-sterile), packaging, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals according to prescription, physician order, or floor stock request in compliance with state and federal law and regulation.
  • Handles all aspects of pharmacy operations to include order review and validation, sterile and non-sterile compounding, controlled substance/diversion management, pharmacy automation, and all state/federal law and regulation.
  • Establishes an environment of safety and assures safe practices for the patient as evidenced by recognizing and implementing safe medication practices, and following policies and procedures that comply with regulatory agency regulations.
  • Responsible for all core clinical pharmacy programs and commitment to evidence-based patient care, to including, but not limited to IV to PO, renal/hepatic dosing, therapeutic interchange, antimicrobial stewardship, anticoagulation management, duplicate therapy, drug-drug interactions, non-formulary management and weight based dosing.


Qualifications

Education

  • Doctoral Degree, Pharmacy (Required) or
  • Bachelors Degree, Pharmacy (Required)


Experience

  • 1 year Prior pharmacy experience in area of practice related to the position (Preferred)
  • 1 year PGY1 Residency (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensed Pharmacist - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) within 30 Days(Required)
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) (Preferred)
  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) - Board of Pharmacy Specialties (Preferred)
