Position Summary

The music therapist is responsible for providing assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services for pediatric patients and their families as well as additional professional duties beyond the routine daily responsibilities.


Position Specific Responsibilities

  • • Provide therapeutic music interventions in the psychosocial, developmental, and rehabilitative domains for individual, group, and co-treatment sessions.

    • Develop therapeutic treatment plans, including goals and objectives, addressing coping skills, pain/anxiety management, psychosocial adjustment, developmental skills, neurological recovery, physical rehabilitation, and family support and education for all assigned patients.

    • Evaluate the effectiveness of all therapeutic music interventions provided, and make changes and adaptations as necessary.

    • Regularly consult and collaborate with the treatment team.

    • Assists with music therapy student training programs as assigned and serves as a mentor and positive role model to all students, interns, and new staff.

    • Maintains all essential clinical documentation and productivity statistics.

    • Participates in ongoing continuing education related to clinical specialty and keeps apprised of recent developments in evidence-based practices.

    • Assures maintenance and care of music therapy equipment and spaces (e.g., recording studio).

    • Advocates for patients and families within a family-centered care philosophy.

    • Serves as an educational resource on medical music therapy both within the hospital and the community.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Required - Bachelor's Degree Music Therapy from an AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) approved program.
  • Preferred - Coursework/Training Specialized training in Neurologic Music Therapy.
  • Preferred - Master's Degree
  • Preferred - 1 year Experience as a Music Therapist.
  • Preferred - Experience in treating patients in a wide age range from infant to adolescence.
  • Preferred - Experience working in the healthcare setting.


Skills

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.
  • Language Skills: Spanish-bilingual preferred.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces integrated healthcare at home philosophy.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Possesses effective skills in communication, both oral and written, problem solving, interpersonal relationships and prioritization.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Exhibits ability to establish and maintain trusting relationships with patients and families.


Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Required upon hire: Board Certified (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists, or eligible to sit for the certification exam


Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Adaptations can be made to accommodate team members with disabilities. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. In a healthcare setting, exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to the field is expected. Routine use of standard medical equipment and tools associated with clinical care is essential.
