JOB SUMMARY
The Research Assistant, Sr. supports investigators by performing moderately complex research and experimentation following established protocols in a neuroscience laboratory studying microglia, myelination, and neurodegenerative diseases. As a foundational member of a newly established lab, this position performs routine lab and equipment maintenance, such as cleaning glassware, counter tops, and equipment, sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus, and assists with primary research projects. This position also performs various clerical and editorial duties, to include compiling, processing, and analyzing data, as well as performing training duties.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with research projects; performs independent research; plans, designs and implements research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator
Manages mouse colony maintenance, including breeding, genotyping, and administering injections
Prepares and maintains culture media, reagents, and experimental animals; grows primary and immortalized cell cultures
Performs various molecular and cellular assays and sterilizes equipment
Cuts, stains and mounts specimens for histology and immunohistochemistry; interprets experimental test data
Takes a lead role in lab management by ordering laboratory supplies, organizing the lab space, and performing minor equipment repairs
Compiles processes and analyzes data; records research procedures and results; files and maintains records
Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Broad knowledge involving laboratory techniques or other specialized knowledge is desired
Knowledge of laboratory procedures: Immunostaining, cell culture, genotyping
Knowledge of the use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, and reagents
Strong interpersonal/human relation skills and verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions and strictly adhere to established lab protocols
Ability to tend to details
Ability to maintain records and inventories efficiently
Ability to operate a personal computer
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in science or a closely related field
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous hands-on experience with rodent models (handling, breeding, genotyping, perfusion)
Experience with cell culture techniques.
One or more years of experience working in a molecular biology, immunology, or neuroscience laboratory
Strong scientific writing and editing skills, with the ability to assist in proofreading and preparing manuscripts or grant materials
