Job Summary

The Digital Advisory Unit (DAU) of the IMF's Information Technology Department (ITD) assists the Fund's departments in assessing and advising member countries on the digitalization of their financial systems and economies. This encompasses topics such as digital finance, central bank digital currencies, the tokenization of digital assets, and the impact of AI for member countries. Additionally, digital risks are systematically explored when assisting countries. Research and Development (R&D) plays an important role in ensuring that DAU maintains its expertise on technology trends relevant to countries.

Within this context, the Digital Expert plays a pivotal role in conducting research on the latest developments in AI, with a particular emphasis on Generative AI and Agentic AI. This involves staying abreast of cutting-edge advancements and understanding their implications for financial systems and economies, as well as fiscal operations (PFMs, Customs operations etc). The expert’s insights are crucial for assisting IMF staff with analytical work and capacity development (CD) missions, whenever a deep knowledge of AI is essential.

Under the supervision of DAU’s digital expert in charge of AI, this person identifies emerging trends and develops proofs of concepts that demonstrate the value of these technologies for member countries. They also collaborate with other AI researchers within the IMF to ensure a seamless exchange of knowledge and alignment with the Business Technology Strategy. This position supports the goal that ITD, and DAU in particular, remain at the forefront of technological innovation, especially AI,  providing informed and strategic advice to Fund’s member countries.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Relevant experience may have been acquired working in a similar capacity, preferably in context of an international organization.

• Advanced degree in either Computer Science, Data science, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics

• Proven experience in doing R&D in the domain of AI

• Proven ability to apply that knowledge to a variety of domains related to the mission of the IMF, including fiscal operations or financial systems.

• A mix of demonstrated analytical thinking, a track record of sound and impactful technology expertise in AI.

• Skilled in presenting complex AI topic to less technical colleagues.

• Strong oral communication skills – able to convey and deliver persuasively, advice and explain possible implications of AI trends related to core issues of the Fund to a diverse international audience.

• Team player – ability to build strong relationships within the team and across the institution

• Versatile and adaptive - Comfortable switching quickly between research work and hands-on operational tasks

• Learning agility – keeping abreast of their key technology knowledge and the potential implications on IMF and its member countries.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1. Trend Analysis: Conduct comprehensive research on emerging AI technologies, particularly Generative AI, to identify trends and potential impacts on financial systems and economies in the next 3 to 5 years.

2. Proof of Concept Development: Create and test proofs of concept to demonstrate the practical applications and benefits of AI technologies for member countries.

3. Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: Work closely with other AI researchers within the IMF to exchange knowledge, align research efforts, and ensure consistency with the Business Technology Strategy.

4. Advisory Support: Provide expert advice to IMF staff on AI-related topics during analytical work and capacity development (CD) missions, ensuring that AI insights are effectively integrated into their work.

5. Risk Assessment: Evaluate the digital risks associated with AI technologies and conduct research on possible mitigations, in the context of R&D for member countries.

6. Training and Workshops: Organize and conduct training sessions and workshops for IMF staff and member country representatives to enhance their understanding of AI technologies and their applications.

7. Knowledge Transfer: Develop and deliver demos, documentation, and presentations to transfer knowledge about AI technologies to colleagues and member countries, ensuring they are well-informed and capable of leveraging these technologies effectively.
