We’re currently recruiting for a Solid Waste Project Coordinator. The primary responsibilities for the job are to support the City’s efforts to deliver high quality and economical solid waste services to residential, commercial, multi-family and mixed-use building customers in the city of Vancouver, including downtown shared enclosures. To offer administrative and logistical support for ongoing and seasonal programs, including scheduling, gathering and tracking data, maintaining records and reporting outcomes. To help plan and manage special projects and supports programs led by other staff or partners. Represent the solid waste team at events and assist customers over the phone and email.

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position. The schedule for this position is M-F, 8am to 5pm.

Job Details

Essential Functions:

  • Gather, enter and track data in support of projects and programs. Monitor performance measures and produce reports. Update and revise documents, support seasonal coupon program administration, organize and maintain files.
  • Receive, respond to or escalate customer inquiries and concerns to resolve garbage, recycle and organics service issues.
  • Coordinate field visits with other city departments to assess conditions of garbage, recycling, organics and glass recycling service levels. Audit service level needs against contracted hauler agreements. Recommend updates and waste diversion opportunities based on observations in support of the city’s Climate Action Framework.
  • Represent the solid waste team at Neighborhood Cleanups, community presentations, staffing/tabling at city and community events; occasionally working evenings or weekends.
  • Update, format and maintain content for external or internal websites, and other public communications materials.   
  • Assist with development and implementation of programs, pilots and services; implement and suggest modifications to processes.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as identified and assigned by supervisor or program leads.

Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • 1 (one) year experience in community engagement, municipal services, environmental sciences, solid waste operations, planning, business administration, waste handling and collection, or related fields.
  • Associate's Degree in public policy, business, planning, science/engineering, environmental management, communications. Trade or technical college in related field will also be considered.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Computer Skills

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office – particularly OneDrive, Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel. 
  • Skilled in reviewing, updating and entering data.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Ability to obtain a driver’s license within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge or interest in the environment, in particular solid waste (garbage, recycling and organics) systems, facilities and practices. 
  • Knowledge of project management essentials.
  • Knowledge related to customer service, conflict resolution, community outreach and education.

  • Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Display a friendly and helpful attitude. Enjoy working with people of all ages in person, over phone, email or virtually.
  • Provide a high level of customer service at all times.

  • Lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

  • Works in safe and responsible manner; not putting self or others at risk. Complies with applicable policies and procedures including but not limited to using personal protective equipment, observing warning signs, learning about potential hazards, and reporting all unsafe conditions.
