Direct supervision of phlebotomy and specimen processing functions and staff.

Responsibilities
- Supervises and coordinates the functions of assigned sections to achieve maximum efficiency and productivity.
- Assures integrity of patient specimens, quality control, equipment performance and maintenance.
- Monitors section functions; prepares related reports and charts.
- Designs training programs for assigned sections. Conducts training in phlebotomy and specimen processing functions.
- Directly supervises laboratory staff in assigned sections.
- Consults regularly with the assistant director and/or manager of the day as appropriate.
- Communicates effectively with testing personnel as required.
- Submits recommendations for capital budget and staffing levels to the assistant director.
- Prepares procedures for assigned sections. Maintains section procedure manuals.
- Maintains adequate supplies for assigned sections. Monitors inventory levels.
- Assists in the orientation of new employees in the department.
- Collects/processes specimens as necessary using established techniques for the various age groups assigned.
- Monitors safety and infection control aspects for assigned sections.
- Monitors morgue supplies and cleanliness. Informs appropriate MMC department of supply and cleaning needs. Reports problems to the pathologist on call.
- Performs departmental maintenance and other duties as assigned.
- Remains mentally alert and maintains concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods, at times under stress. Maintains adaptability, flexibility, initiative, persistence, and efficiency of time management and action.
- Does not pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Provides safe, efficient, competent care to population assigned. Meets MMC Environment of Care Standards.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required with course work to include English, typing, filing and general office etiquette.
Minimum Experience:
A minimum of five (5) years of phlebotomy and specimen processing experience is required.
