Responsibilities

The Underwriter I – Lawyers Professional Liability role is designed for professionals with foundational experience in underwriting, particularly within the Errors & Omissions (E&O) space. This position focuses on evaluating and managing risk for Lawyers Professional Liability accounts.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, a collaborative mindset, and a desire to grow within a dynamic underwriting team. This role offers the opportunity to build key broker relationships and contribute to the expansion of our business portfolio.

 

Underwriting  

  • Review and analysis of new and renewal submissions, including claims history, financials, and coverage needs.
  • Help determine territory and pricing strategies in collaboration with other LPL underwriters.
  • Prepare and issue indications, quotes, binders, and policy documents with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Monitor upcoming renewals and ensure timely communication with brokers.

Account Management

  • Adherence to pricing initiatives, rate plan and rate strategy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Underwriting Guidelines.
  • Measured success based on written premium and retention.

Broker Relationship Management

  • Support broker communications by timely gathering required information and responding to inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate broker contact logs, reports, and activity records in underwriting system.
  • Communicate expectations to brokers and work with Customer Relationship Management tools and systems.
  • Travel to visit producers within defined territories based on relationships.

Pre-Underwriting & Operational Tasks

  • Gather third-party reports, prior claim history, and other underwriting data for renewal accounts.
  • Assist in identifying accounts requiring non-renewal or changes in terms.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of underwriting documentation and system entries.

Training & Development

  • Participate in structured training programs and on-the-job learning to build underwriting expertise.
  • Collaborate with senior underwriters and cross-functional teams on special projects and process improvements.
  • Attend industry education events.

Other

  • Special projects or reports as determined by need.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field).
  • Insurance designations, such as an RPLU, are a plus.
  • Prior experience in Errors & Omissions insurance or professional liability underwriting.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Motivated by a competitive, results-driven environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Customer-focused, collaborative, and eager to grow professionally.

Base Salary Range: $72,000 - 88,000. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. This role is eligible to participate in the annual discretionary bonus program.
