Overview

Assist the Manager in ensuring compliance with proper laboratory protocols, including regulatory and hospital policies, for clerical functions such as ordering, accessioning, and distributing patient specimens. Provide guidance and instruction to other clerical employees as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens from couriers and verify that all specimens recorded on courier logs are accounted for.
  • Assist Point of Care management staff to ensure compliance with POC standards, including serving as a Liaison between the Lab and Nursing.
  • Triage, prioritize, and sort specimens appropriately for accessioning and processing.
  • Process patient specimens for testing in accordance with established protocols.
  • Perform data entry of patient demographics, clinical information, specimen source, and test orders into the computer systems. Accession specimen containers as needed.
  • Document orders lacking appropriate information and notify the laboratory service manager.
  • Record and resolve issues with problem cases and ensure appropriate documentation is completed.
  • Review patient specimen requisitions for accuracy and ensure all errors are documented, corrected, and forwarded to the laboratory service manager for review.
  • Respond to departmental phone calls and assist clients with inquiries.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety precautions and comply with established departmental policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment and foster teamwork within the department.
  • Maintain and deliver inventory of laboratory supplies as assigned.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of patient information at all times.
  • Perform specimen send out functions, ensuring that all Reference Lab send outs are completed and resulted in a timely manner.
  • Resolve pending test lists, ensuring that tests pending for longer than the stated time are investigated and addressed promptly.
  • Ensure the laboratory environment meets regulatory standards and take corrective actions when non-compliance is identified.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED,

  • Associate/bachelor’s degree Preferred.

Experience:

  • At least (6) Years of job-related experience in the laboratory.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal)
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Typing and data entry knowledge

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
