Job Summary and Responsibilities
Surgical Technologist Responsibilities:
The Surgical Technologist performs essential tasks and functions as an integral member of the surgical team, including:
Operating Room Preparation:
- Prepares the operating room for surgical procedures, ensuring all equipment is functioning properly and safely.
- Prepares the operating room and the sterile field for surgical procedures by organizing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using strict sterile technique.
Surgical Support:
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology as it relates to the patient and surgical procedure.
- Independently performs tasks within the sterile field.
- Acts in the role of a scrub nurse in accordance with the patient's care plan and departmental staffing requirements.
- Anticipates both usual and unexpected events during surgical procedures and responds efficiently.
Aseptic Practices & Safety:
- Adheres rigorously to aseptic practices, providing and maintaining a safe and sterile environment.
Patient Care & Departmental Duties:
- Assists with patient care activities under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Performs additional duties according to department-specific expectations as identified and assigned.
Job Requirements
Required Education:
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Required Licensure & Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS): Required upon hire. Acceptable certifications include:
- American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
- American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO (must state "Professional Level-with AED")
- American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
- Certification in Surgical Technology
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
