2025 Specialty Nurse Intern Program - Adult Emergency Department
Full-time, Day Shift & Night Shift Available
In conjunction with the University of Chicago Medicine’s mission to provide superior health care, the Specialty Nurse Intern is a nursing student who provides patient care in specialty areas under the direction of a registered nurse. The Specialty Nurse Intern provides care to patients and their families by assuming defined patient care responsibilities and by performing specific clinical skills appropriate to the role.
In this year-round internship, students will be matched with the Adult Emergency Department for the duration of the academic program. The formal Nurse Internship program will last throughout the entire academic year. The expectation is to continue working throughout the entire academic year with flexible scheduling. It is the expectation that these candidates will work at UCM in the identified clinical area for 2 years following graduation.
We are looking for candidates that have a passion to work for UChicago! Following the summer, the expectation is that the internship will continue throughout the year. The schedule will be flexible to work with your school schedule.

Required Qualifications
- BLS (CPR)
- Request 2 professional reference letters prior to the interview - one letter is required from a nursing instructor
- Copy of most recent transcript
- GPA of 3.0 or higher required
- 250-word essay on “What being a nurse means to you?” and “How this program will help you achieve your future goals as a nurse?”
- Be enrolled full-time in an accredited ADN, BSN, or direct-entry MSN program
- Must be entering your final year in an ADN, BSN, or direct-entry MSN program in the fall of 2026 (Anticiapted Graduation date of 05/2027)

Specialty Nurse Internship Details
- Candidates need to be available for 12-hour shifts for the full duration of the program: commitment requirements for the school year will be flexible and outlined by the leadership team.
- Positions will include Day and Night shift opportunities
- Candidates will be expected to work some weekends
