Overview

Handles incoming and outgoing calls, paging, public address and doctors’ answering services.  Handles all emergency codes and any other emergency condition. Must operate SLI Console, page Console, doctors’ answering services, TTY Computer and CRT Computer.

Responsibilities

  • Takes messages on doctors’ answering services. Records and delivers messages to doctors on answering service.
  • Directs callers to proper departments.
  • Pages doctors for emergency and routine calls.
  • Notifies the proper staff in case of emergencies, i.e. fires, emergency codes, disaster drills, etc.
  • Records information concerning doctors entering and leaving Hospital premises.
  • Records and places long distance calls and telegrams.
  • Provides general information on incoming calls, visiting hours, hospital location, and patient information.
  • Removes patient’s name from list due to discharge or expiration.
  • Tests Motorola Page Units, and if necessary, issues new batteries.
  • Responsible for console and its smooth operation while on duty.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent. 

Experience:

  • At least two (2) years' telephone operations experience.
  • Generally at least two (2) months' on the job training required to perform job with minimum supervision.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of #701 Centrex Console, #800 PBX, SLI, TTY Computer and CRT.
  • Must be able to handle 125 various types of calls per hour.
  • Must be able to take reports of phone trouble and enter in book.
  • Must be able to take traffic readings by the hour and day.
  • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Mostly sedentary work.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time; close continual visual attention.
  • Hearing and seeing must be good.
  • Must be able to work in close quarters.
