Overview

Perform a variety of routine clerical functions including ordering, accessioning, and distributing patient specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Receive specimens from couriers and verifies the specimens recorded on courier logs are received.
  • Triage, prioritize, and sorts specimens appropriately for accessioning and processing.
  • Process all patient specimens for testing.
  • Perform data entry login of patient demographics, clinical information, specimen source, and test orders from patient specimen requisitions information computer systems and accessions specimen containers as needed or required.
  • Document any orders, which are lacking appropriate documentation to laboratory service manager.
  • Document all problem cases appropriately.
  • Shred all necessary documentation.
  • Review patient specimen requisitions against data entry of requisition information for accuracy, document errors noted and forwards documentation to laboratory service manager, and corrects errors found.
  • Answer departmental phone calls and assist clients as needed.
  • Exercise all laboratory safety precautions and adhere to laboratory policy and procedures established by department.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment and to the team effort of the department.
  • Deliver and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies as assigned.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentially at all times.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Minimum six (6) months job related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
  • Basic knowledge in medical terminology.
  • Typing and data entry knowledge.

 Physical Requirements:

  • Involves standing, walking, sitting, lifting and talking.
  • May include some repetitive motions.
  • Perform other duties as required.
