The Director of Respiratory Therapy and Business Development of Long Term Acute Care (LTACH) manages and coordinates the professional activities within the department of respiratory therapy and business development. Department activities are directed toward collaborative planning with other healthcare workers in accordance with the overall mission of Raritan Bay Medical Center LTACH.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Director of Respiratory Therapy and Business Development of Long-Term Acute Care (LTACH) at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Manages and plans staff coverage and services for the respiratory therapy and business development within the LTACH department according to hospital policy and procedures, operating within the budget as approved by the management.
- Demonstrates competency in assessing, analyzing, and utilizing data for the purpose of obtaining information necessary for effective decision making and performance improvement processes.
- Responsible for the timekeeping of holidays, vacations, and the recording of sick time by recording updates on recent schedules and to submit this biweekly for payroll.
- Distributes the daily workload equally amongst the staff according to department policy and procedure and ensures that work is accomplished in a timely fashion according to department policy and procedure.
- Use advanced knowledge of long term acute care settings to ensure speciality procedures are met.
- Under the direction of a physician, manages ventilators and patients in the acute care setting according to department policy.
- Follows established policies in performance of specialty procedures, such as pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopes, intubations, arterial blood gases as outlined in the department policy.
- According to hospital policy and procedure, establish standards and work methods. Encourages development of habits and attitudes, counsel employees on job problems.
- Establishes standards for the various tests and treatments, making staff aware of the standards to be met.
- Ensures that all operating areas and staff are in keeping with regulatory agency requirements and the Medical Center policies and procedures relative to safety and security, including, but not limited to: New Employee Orientation; Periodic Safety/Disaster Training; Accident/ Incident Report; Corporate Compliance, Safety Goals; Annual TJC and OSHA required programs.
- Leads business development activities for LTACH. Participates in meetings, engages stakeholders and physician groups to grow the census. Provides education and strategies inside the network and outside the network to grow census. Develops a marketing plan for LTACH and understands the competition to grow business.
- Creates objectives and strategies to drive census and ensure admission goals are achieved. Strives to increase the number of ventilator patients. Focuses attention on recruiting and credentialing new physicians to help drive census.
- Develops and maintains methods by which the levels required for the quality and appropriateness of therapy can be documented on an ongoing basis.
- Provides encouragement to staff for improved performance based on review, audit and observation. Counsels employees on job problems. Investigates, discusses grievances and initiates disciplinary action according to hospital and procedure.
- Assures staff regularly maintains active and supportive communication with other professional disciplines concerning patient care, therapeutic modification, and discharge planning with documentation noted in the medical record.
- Develops, instructs, and intervenes with proper techniques, procedures, and safety precautions to maintain patient, personnel, and department safety.
- Develops, coordinates, and presents annual staff development programs, including skills training, work rules, infection control, fire and electrical safety within the department as appropriate according to hospital and department policy.
- Initiates preventive and/or corrective action to patient and/or patient environment to ensure safety according to policy.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor's degree plus certified or registered with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
- At least five years supervisory/management and or leadership experience in Respiratory Therapy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Master's degree preferred.
- Experience in a long-term acute care hospital setting.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- NJ Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
Starting Minimum Rate
Minimum rate of $124,571.20 Annually

Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization. Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered. Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
