The Role: Principal Analyst, Datacenter Research Analyst

We are seeking a dynamic Datacenter Research Analyst to support the S&P Technology Media and Telecom (TMT) Datacenter Services and Infrastructure analyst team. This role will focus on covering the trends and technologies driving the US datacenter markets. A key aspect of this position will require the successful candidate to travel and communicate effectively with clients in both Spanish and Portuguese. Datacenter markets globally are experiencing explosive growth, primarily driven by expansions from hyperscale and cloud providers. This growth is increasingly accommodating artificial intelligence hardware (GPU-based compute) and other computing types. While this expansion is exciting, it raises questions regarding the long-term sustainability of energy demand and its impact on local power grids and surrounding communities. The ideal candidate will contribute to our understanding of this critically important segment.

The Team: In an era where comprehending IT market disruptions is vital, the S&P Global Market Intelligence TMT Datacenter Services and Infrastructure team plays a crucial role in articulating key perspectives on trends driving innovation and disruption. We analyze the services and technologies adopted by the datacenter industry to enhance operational efficiency, achieve competitive advantages, and create new revenue opportunities. Our team's insights are valued by leading companies worldwide. The successful candidate will enhance our research capabilities across various US markets.

Responsibilities and Impact: The 451 Research Datacenter Services and Infrastructure team serves a diverse range of clients, including IT technology and services vendors, datacenter providers, service providers, investment communities, corporate leaders, and IT practitioners. We provide insights on various topics, including market trends, new technologies, and sustainability issues within the datacenter industry. Our analysts help shape the markets they cover and inform clients' strategic decisions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting industry analyst research on the US datacenter market and its trends, working independently and collaboratively within a global team.
  • Assessing build pipelines to understand construction activities and scale.
  • Analyzing pricing dynamics among colocation providers.
  • Evaluating vacancy rates and the factors influencing them.
  • Writing and publishing both short (2-page) and long (10-25 page) reports on datacenter markets and providers, as well as broader industry topics. Short reports will be published weekly, while longer reports will be planned in advance.
  • Engaging in end-user survey work, focusing on datacenter infrastructure and services, and analyzing results to produce research reports.

Additionally, the successful candidate will:

  • Participate in briefings with key vendors and attend events (virtual or in-person, contingent on travel conditions) focused on datacenter market segments, effectively communicating industry trends.
  • Respond to inquiries from market vendors and enterprise users.
  • Contribute to custom advisory research projects.
  • Collaborate with fellow analysts on cross-practice topics, such as the impact of datacenters on power utilities.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1-2+ years of experience in datacenter services and infrastructure, with the ability to engage credibly with practitioners, vendors, and investors.
  • Applicants must provide writing samples suitable for the S&P TMT audience. Familiarity with 451 Research and its output is highly recommended (visit: https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/solutions/451-research).
  • Experience in product management, product marketing, or implementation roles; vertical market research with an industry analyst firm; market intelligence or strategy roles with a datacenter services vendor; or journalism/technical writing in these fields.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required, with superior writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is also required.
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in a technical field (math, science, engineering, IT) or in business, writing/communications, or liberal arts, along with relevant experience.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as conditions allow.
  • A successful analyst possesses an inquisitive nature, always seeking to learn and explore.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to or experience in broader markets of information technology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Experience with public speaking.
