Overview

Experienced lawyer responsible for: (i) providing comprehensive legal oversight of Blackstone's real estate business; (ii) ensuring the group’s adherence to Blackstone's legal and regulatory risk framework; and (iii) leading a team of high-performing legal professionals. This role combines sophisticated legal expertise with business acumen to provide strategic counsel to a fast-moving, complex global business operating across multiple geographies, products, and stakeholder relationships.

Real Estate’s General Counsel would work under the oversight of the Chief Legal Officer work and in close partnership with:

  • Real Estate’s senior leadership and its acquisitions, asset management, BREDS, capital markets, core plus, finance, and ICS (client relations) teams
  • Global Head of Compliance, L&C COO, other Business Unit and regional GCs and the firm’s Heads of Litigation, Fund Formation, and Private Wealth Solutions legal teams

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the legal strategy and oversight for Blackstone’s global real estate platform through the life cycle of an investment (from acquisitions and capital markets through asset management and dispositions).
  • Provide strategic counsel on capital raising, risk assessment, and regulatory matters while balancing business objectives with legal considerations.
  • Work in close coordination with Blackstone’s various corporate groups including Finance, Government Relations, ICS, Public Affairs, and PWS.
  • Oversee and drive success of a multi-jurisdictional team of internal Blackstone lawyers and external legal professionals in Revantage while managing relationships with portfolio company General Counsels and outside counsel (including $400 million+ legal spend).
  • Drive operational and other efficiencies across legal and regulatory matters.
  • Navigate complex issues particularly regarding legal and regulatory matters and other key stakeholder challenges and provide clear direction through special situations.

Qualifications

  • JD required.
  • 15+ years of real estate and corporate legal experience, including substantial time at a leading law firm and/or in-house experience at a major investment management firm.
  • Broad legal experience including strong knowledge of corporate law, real estate law, securities laws, investment adviser regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience working in a global business environment or, at minimum, a global outlook and approach to problem-solving is essential.
  • Proven track record managing legal teams and outside counsel relationships across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with experience developing and mentoring legal talent.
  • Outstanding business judgment used to serve as a trusted strategic advisor to the firm's Chief Legal Officer and Real Estate Executive Committee.
  • Strong commercial mindset with experience balancing legal risks with business objectives.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills with experience identifying and articulating succinctly what matters most, complemented by excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skill structuring and executing complex transactions and solving sophisticated legal and regulatory problems while managing multiple priorities and stakeholders under tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; builds trust and strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Strong negotiation, consensus-building, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Commercial mindset with deep understanding of real estate markets, investment strategies, and business operations. Provide practical, business-oriented legal solutions.

Expected annual base salary range:

$350,000 - $350,000

Actual base salary within that range will be determined by several components including but not limited to the individual's experience, skills, qualifications and job location. For roles located outside of the US, please disregard the posted salary bands as these roles will follow a separate compensation process based on local market comparables.

Additional compensation and benefits offered in connection with the role consist of comprehensive health benefits, including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, and FSA benefits; paid time off; life insurance; 401(k) plan; and discretionary bonuses. Certain employees may also be eligible for equity and other incentive compensation at Blackstone’s sole discretion.
