Summary

Performs ultrasonic images of the heart and great vessels to investigate a wide variety of acquired and congenital heart diseases.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time. 

  • Performs transthoracic, transesophageal and stress echocardiograms of cardiac anatomy and function in adult and pediatric patients

  • Performs all measurements and calculations that are related to echocardiograms using M-mode, color Doppler mapping, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral analysis

  • Assists supervisor with the implementation of in-service education programs

  • Prepares test results for review by interpreting physician

  • Maintains and cleans equipment and work environment

  • Alerts physician to potential life threatening situations observed during echocardiograms

  • Shares responsibility for Cardiac Diagnostics Department on call duties

  • Records and verifies patient billing information

  • Participates in the collection of data for departmental quality assurance program

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum require­ments necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Associate science degree preferred

  • RDCS or RCS certification or registry eligible preferred

  • Must attempt registry certification within 1 year and gain certification within 2 years of the hire date

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • New graduate with at least 800 hours of clinical cardiac scan time or

  • Graduated from an accredited program or

  • 1 year of on-the-job training

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to understand test procedures and verbally explain to patients

  • Form perceptions required to compare recorded patterns to characteristics of normal patterns

  • Preference for scientific and technical activities required to understand and operate electronic test equipment

  • Ability to interact confidently on a one-to-one basis with patients of varying ages, genders, ethnicities and backgrounds

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Manual dexterity to perform diagnostic tests
  • Ability to use both hands independently
  • Excellent visual and auditory acuity
  • Potential for exposure to minimal amount of radiation
  • Potential for eyestrain due to monitoring CRT
  • Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parental contact with blood or potentially infectious material
  • Ability to lift, turn, and reposition patients for the study ordered
  • Ability to push large rolling ultrasound equipment that weighs in excess of 300 pounds across long distances inside of the hospital
  • Ability to work in confined spaces for correct positioning of patients in small rooms
  • May stand for long periods during procedures
  • Ability to push occupied stretchers and beds
