Overview

The Mold Maker and Caster is a skilled technician with practical experience in creating high-quality molds and castings for various film production needs. With strong foundational skills and an expanding expertise across a range of materials, this role is critical to ensuring the precision and durability of molds and cast parts. The ideal candidate is proficient in key mold-making techniques and comfortable working with materials such as silicone, plaster, and foam, with the flexibility to adapt techniques to unique project requirements. Working collaboratively with the effects and fabrication teams, this individual demonstrates both technical proficiency and a proactive approach to problem-solving, ensuring that all molds and castings meet high production standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Mold Creation: Independently craft a variety of molds, including open-face, press, and multi-part molds, adjusting techniques as needed to meet specific project needs
• Material Application and Reinforcement: Prepare and apply materials like silicone, plaster, and fiberglass, reinforcing molds and castings for durability and stability
• Seaming and Finishing: Seam, repair, and finish castings with attention to quality and detail, ensuring production-ready results
• Painting and Color Matching: Apply basic painting and color-matching techniques within assigned materials to achieve desired aesthetic standards
• Mold Master Adjustments: Modify mold masters with a focus on precision and alignment to ensure high-quality cast outcomes
• Problem Solving: Proactively address common casting and mold-making challenges, working with senior team members to implement efficient, creative solutions
• Collaboration and Workflow Support: Work closely with other team members across departments, offering support and contributing to a smooth production workflow
• Workspace and Equipment Maintenance: Maintain an organized workspace, following safety protocols, and properly managing materials and equipment for efficient operations
• Flexibility: Willingness to work extended hours as needed to meet production demands

Qualifications

• Experience: 3-5 years of experience in mold making and casting, ideally within a film, theater, or art production environment; portfolio showcasing relevant projects is preferred
• Material Expertise: Proficient in working with materials such as Platinum and Tin silicone, fiberglass, plaster, and various foams; familiarity with GI 1000 and foam latex is advantageous
• Technical Skills: Strong understanding of mold-making techniques, including keying, master modification, and armature alignment; skilled in reinforcing and finishing molds
• Tool Proficiency: Comfortable using hand tools and some power tools, with safe practices in handling materials and equipment
• Detail-Oriented: High level of attention to detail, supporting quality assurance and production-ready standards in casting and molding processes
• Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a positive attitude and flexibility to collaborate across departments
• Problem-Solving Ability: Analytical and solution-focused approach to addressing issues in the mold-making and casting process
