Planned Parenthood Western Pennsylvania (PPWP) is the local affiliate of the country’s leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider. PPWP operates five health centers located in Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Cambria Counties and provides education and advocacy services throughout western Pennsylvania.
Registered Nurses are responsible for planning and providiung delivery of optimal patient care. Facilitates and coordinates activities of recovery room. Identifies patient care priorities and uses available resources for delivery of care. Assists in the procedure room and monitors sedation clients. Performs programs, participates in centralized follow-up, provides on call services.

Nursing Responsibilities
· Inspects emergency equipment each clinic morning.
· Administers medications before abortion procedure and in recovery room in accordance with established medical and nursing standards.
· Inserts IV’s when needed. Inserts hep-locks for conscious sedation patients and maintains skill for IV access and inserts a minimum of two hep-locks per year with documentation of such for the personnel file.
· Supervises the recovery room. Assesses and admits patients to recovery room post-abortion, reviews medical history, operative report, physician orders for recovery and discharge. Charts blood pressure, pulse, and level of discomfort. Escorts conscious sedation patients to restroom to assess bleeding. Makes coffee and tea for patients. Monitors and reorganizes recovery room supplies, and re-stocks as needed.
· Explains small tissue and ectopic precautions. Communicates with lab to coordinate beta hCG testing when needed.
· Prior to discharge:
· Reviews post-abortion instructions identifying ways to manage discomfort at home.
· Reviews birth control instructions
· Evaluates and documents the physical and emotional condition of patient.
· Fills patients’ information packets with birth control, information sheets, excuse, and other necessary materials.
· Evaluates patients’ bleeding and levels of discomfort.
· Arranges for escort for conscious sedation patients.
· Initiates or assists in emergency care delivery in accordance with established medical standards.
· Performs sonograms.
· Assists where needed to facilitate patients through the health center by answering telephones, auditing charts, setting-up rooms, assigning /covering breaks, etc.
· Monitors expiration dates on medications and equipment.
· Trains staff to perform blood pressure, use of thermometer and emergency equipment.
· Audits medical record documentation.
· Participates in the centralized patient referral and follow-up process.
· Knowledge of and participation in the PPWP Risk and Quality Management Program and the PPWP Patient Safety Program, Child Abuse Reporting Policy.
· Participates in and is accountable for all research-related duties as delegated.
Abortion Procedure Room Counseling Responsibilities
· Prepares a procedure room for patients; includes obtaining all equipment needed.
· Log all medical abortion medications.
· Escorts patient to the procedure room.
· Provides intra-operative monitoring of sedated clients, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respirations, EKG
· Utilizes relaxation techniques to reduce anxiety and manage pain.
· Assists physician with instruments during the procedure.
· Reports occurrence of pertinent physical or emotional changes in patient’s condition to the physician.
· Assists in emergency procedures as trained. Calls for assistance when needed and notifies administrator of any problems.
· Takes patient’s blood pressure after procedure with sedation.
· After the procedure, assists patient, admits to recovery area, documents chart and relays pertinent information regarding patient to recovery room nurse.
· Cleans procedure room.
· Notifies significant others of discharge time and provides post-procedure consultation as needed.
· Accompanies patients during cervical preparation, emergency visits and pelvic exams.
Emergency Call
· Documents calls for PPWP accurately and files.
· Understands emergency criteria and instructions.
· Contacts physician for emergency medical care; prescriptions, hospital visits, re-check appointments.
· Follows up with patients with calls, documentation and filing using the referral log according to PPWP standards.
· Coordinates and assists in crisis intervention.
$42.5 - $42.5 per-hour-wage
