Overview

The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is an experienced RN that maintains a high level of leadership and provider of support to the staff as well as the patient and family members, The Assistant Head Nurse performs a wide range of duties from a simple management of crowd control to the most complex resolving of ED patient flow.

 

Utilizes principals of nursing practice, coordinates and provides emergency nursing care to all ages, experiencing any type of illness. Serves as a role model for emergency department nursing personnel through demonstration of clinical and leadership skills. The AHN works under the direction of a Nurse Manager, Nurse Director and Vice President, Patient Care Services / Chief Nursing Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Assign duties and responsibilities; supervise and support the nursing staff.
  • Coordinates and evaluates nursing activities in the unit to ensure safe patient care, staff relations, productivity and efficiency of service.
  • Ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed and in a timely manner.
  • Oversees cleanliness of the unit.
  • Investigate and resolves complaints fairly.
  • Initiate referral to supervisors of outstanding issues.
  • Evaluates performance of nurses and Patient Care Technician (PCTs) and counsel them on unsatisfactory job performance.
  • Serves as resource person to the ED nursing staff.
  • Identifies and documents initial observations and ongoing assessments of the patients’ needs for emergency care, and assessment.
  • Sets up emergency equipment as needed.
  • Ensuring regulatory requirements are met and maintained.
  • Participates in assigned departmental or organizational committees, meetings and/or conferences.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and assists staff in clinical role based on staffing needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the RN scope of practice.
  • Establishes work schedules and assignments for staff according to patient census and acuity, space and equipment availability.
  • Ensures that equipment is in working order and that supply levels are maintained appropriately.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement teams and activities.
  • Involved in the performance evaluation process.
  • Participation in unit and multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Participates in supporting the organization’s vision, mission and values and adheres to and exhibits Organizational Standards of Behavior.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the Organization.

Qualifications

Education:

  • BA/BS in Nursing or equivalent from accredited nursing program.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Related Filed preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years' Emergency Department experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills; Works as a team player. 
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills. 
  • Decision making and problem solving. 
  • Able to read, write, see and hear English.

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Current NY State RN License required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • ACLS required.
  • PALS required.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required.
  • NRP preferred.
  • Certified in Emergency Nursing (CEN) preferred.
  • Certified in Pediatric Emergency Nursing preferred.
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course preferred.
  • Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) preferred.
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
  • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.
  • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer.
  • Ability to flex working hours.
