DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves guarding County buildings and property, maintaining order, and giving directions to visitors. The work is performed in accordance with established policy and procedure. The incumbent must exercise sound judgment in providing for the safety of County employees and property. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-level security employee. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Candidates must be able to demonstrate awareness and sensitivity towards promoting an inclusive and diverse learning environment. Working knowledge of the practices and procedures used to insure the maintenance of order and security used in public buildings; working knowledge of fire safety practices used in public buildings; working knowledge of procedures used in the emergency evacuation of buildings; working knowledge of legal regulations governing conduct in public buildings; skill in the use of first aid, skill in the use of fire extinguishers and other related firefighting equipment; ability to be firm with visitors, employees, and clients; ability to be tactful and courteous; ability to spend long periods of time standing or walking; dependability; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have graduated from a standard senior high school and in addition possess one of the following:
A. One (1) year of college training majoring in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Police Science or related field supplemented by one (1) year experience as a watchman, guard, military police, or related security position;
Or
B. Six (6) month’s experience as a watchman, guard, military police, or related security position;
Or
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A criminal background investigation will be conducted on all applicants prior to hire.
Registration as a Security Guard by the State of New York, Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.
Security guards employed by December 31, 1993 may continue employment-pending registration on the following schedule: Those hired in an even year must be registered during 1994 by their anniversary date of hire; those hired in an odd year must be registered during 1995 by their anniversary date of hire.
Security guards hired after December 31, 1993, must register immediately on employment or already be registered.
Official transcripts will be required for successful candidates within 30 days of hire.
