Under general supervision and following established policies, procedures, and Michigan Public Health Code, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for managing patient care from admission to discharge. The RN uses the nursing process (assess, plan, diagnose, implement, evaluate) and works with a healthcare team to ensure high-quality care and timely discharge.
The RN may delegate tasks to support staff and provide hands-on care depending on the patient’s needs. Accurate and timely documentation and communication about patient progress, care given, and future needs are expected during each shift.
RNs who care directly for patients must show competence in working with the specific patient population served.
Education:
Associate Degree in Nursing required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
If not already earned, must be completed within 8 years of hire (required for all nurses hired after December 29, 2013).
License/Certification:
Must be a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing in Michigan.
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required by the end of orientation.
Additional certifications (such as ACLS, PALS, TNCC) may be required depending on the department or role.
Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance required for certain roles.
Special Requirements by Department:
Bronson South Haven (All Units): Must obtain BSN within 8 years of hire.
Emergency Department:
SALT Triage, ESI Triage, NIH Stroke Scale – within 90 days of hire.
ACLS, PALS, and TNCC (for full-time/part-time) – within 6 months of hire.
Special Care Unit: PALS required within 6 months.
Labor & Delivery / Mother-Baby / Antepartum: Fetal Monitoring Certification (through PQF or NCC) within 6 months of intermediate fetal monitoring.
Bronson Lakeview & South Haven (Swing Beds): Annual training required to understand documentation and care differences for swing bed patients.
Assessment:
Collect and review patient data including medical history and vital signs.
Understand both physical and emotional needs of patients.
Diagnosis & Planning:
Identify problems based on assessments.
Work with the patient and family to set health goals and make care plans.
Implementation:
Carry out care plans, give medications, treatments, and patient education.
Ensure patient comfort and safety.
Organize and delegate tasks as needed.
Evaluation:
Monitor and document how patients respond to care.
Adjust the care plan based on results.
Quality Improvement: Take part in activities that improve patient care and nursing practices.
Lifelong Learning: Stay up to date through continued education and maintain records of learning.
Self & Peer Review: Regularly assess your own work and take part in peer reviews.
Teamwork: Share knowledge with coworkers and help create a positive work environment.

For Scrub RN Role:
Review surgical supply needs and prepare equipment before procedures.
Assist the surgical team by anticipating needs during procedures.
Keep up with updates to procedure notes, supply lists, and equipment usage.
Take call shifts on a rotating basis.
Work across multiple surgical specialties as needed.
For HDU Department:
Additional on-call responsibilities outside regular hours.
Swing Bed Care (Lakeview & South Haven):
Complete annual training on swing bed documentation and care expectations.
May be asked to work at either location based on staffing needs.
Must be able to read and analyze data from computer systems and equipment.
Must communicate clearly (verbally, in writing, electronically).
May require long periods of focused work on computers.
Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds; may need to assist with heavier loads occasionally.
