Lead Engineer (Data Engineering)

Hybrid – San Diego (1 day/week onsite)

At ResMed, we design technology and data solutions that help millions of people sleep, breathe, and live healthier lives. As a global leader in connected devices and digital health, our impact extends across patients, providers, and partners worldwide.

We are looking for a high-impact, hands-on Lead Engineer to shape the next generation of ResMed’s data ecosystem. This is a Senior Staff–level technical leadership role for someone who can set direction, define patterns, solve complex architectural challenges, and elevate our data engineering capabilities across the organization.

If you’re the kind of engineer who thrives at the intersection of architecture, hands-on development, and future-facing analytics—this is a rare opportunity to make a global impact at scale.

About the Team

You will join the Analytics Engineering team within the Global Data Platform, a growing group responsible for building and operating the data models, data products, and analytical capabilities that power insights across ResMed.

Our team historically focused on analytics engineering (SQL, dbt, Snowflake), but we are expanding into full-stack data engineering to support real-time data products, advanced analytics, and future ML/AI initiatives. As we adopt more off-the-shelf tools for data movement, the importance shifts toward data modeling excellence, scalable patterns, and forward-looking analytical frameworks.

This is a pivotal moment to influence the technical direction of our platform.

What You’ll Do
As a
Lead Engineer, you will be at the forefront of ResMed’s data strategy, driving the architecture and development of large-scale data processing systems and business intelligence applications. Your key responsibilities include:

  • Architecture – you’ll join a core team that leads critical data architecture design and development activities for our platforms.

  • Real-time Analytics & Streaming – architect and build data solutions using Kafka and Flink to support real-time decision-making across the organization.

  • Large-Scale Data Warehouse Development – craft sophisticated data models using sql and dbt on our Snowflake Platform.

  • Data products – lead the development of data products and services including dimensional data models, semantic layers used to drive business intelligence, predictive models, and recommender systems.

  • Leadership & Mentorship – Lead a functional team, guiding junior engineers and championing best practices in engineering and data strategy.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Define technical strategy, architectural direction, and engineering patterns for data modeling, transformation, and data product design.

  • Serve as a senior technical leader who influences platform roadmap, engineering best practices, and cross-functional alignment.

  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and stakeholders to shape high-impact solutions.

  • Champion CI/CD and IaC best practices throughout all projects and the team.

Analytics Engineering & Data Modeling

  • Design and develop robust data models in Snowflake using SQL and dbt that serve analytics, operations, and downstream data products.

  • Establish governance, standards, testing approaches, and quality frameworks for data modeling at scale.

  • Mentor and guide engineers to elevate system design and analytics engineering competencies.

Data Engineering & Real-Time Processing

  • Build end-to-end data pipelines using Python, orchestration tools, and integration frameworks.

  • Designing ingestion patterns that use Spark, Kafka (for teams that need streaming), file-based ingestion, CDC tools, and connector frameworks.

  • Working with platform partners to ensure scalable, reliable ingestion from internal and external systems.

  • Introducing automation, observability, and resiliency into ingestion and transformation processes.

Future: Advanced Analytics & ML

As our data foundation matures (over the next 6–12 months), you will:

  • Help define the architecture and patterns that enable advanced analytics, ML feature pipelines, predictive models, and ML-driven data products.

  • Partner with data science teams to build scalable and maintainable ML workflows.
ML expertise is a strong advantage but not a Day 1 requirement.

  • Contribute to AI-driven personalization, decision support, recommender systems, and hybrid ML/AI workloads.

  • Help evaluate emerging AI technologies—including LLMs, embeddings, vector search, and AI agents—as part of the data platform’s evolution.

What You Bring (Must-Have Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or equivalent experience.

  • Significant hands-on experience as a senior IC in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data architecture roles (typically 8+ years).

  • Demonstrated expertise with SQL on large-scale analytics platforms (Snowflake strongly preferred).

  • Deep experience building production data pipelines and data models using Python, cloud environments, and modern data stack tooling.

  • Strong experience with dbt or equivalent transformation frameworks.

  • Experience defining technical direction, architectural patterns, and engineering best practices in a large-scale environment.

  • Proficient with Git and enterprise-scale GitHub workflows, including branching strategies, protected branches, release processes, and collaborative development practices.

  • Experience designing or maintaining CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions, including automated testing, environment promotion, artifact/version management, and secure deployment workflows.

  • Comfortable operating in hybrid analytics engineering + data engineering capacity.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Experience with Dagster or Airflow.

  • Familiarity with real-time processing frameworks (Kafka, Flink, Kinesis, etc.).

  • Experience enabling ML/AI workflows—feature stores, model deployment patterns, ML-enabled data products.

  • Master’s degree in a STEM field.

  • Prior experience operating as a Staff or Senior Staff engineer.
