ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Recreation Assistant position at the City of Tucson’s Parks and Recreation Department assists with the development and implementation of recreation programs for children, youth, seniors, and adults. Provides operational support of facilities by opening, closing, and inspecting. Delivers customer service by answering phones, operating the front desk, and working with outside agencies.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answers phones, addresses customer questions, welcomes visitors, and offers information about memberships and facility rules. Manages reservations in the facility. Addresses concerns, complaints, and escalates to management if necessary. Processes payments, uses point of sale system, and registrations. Responds to newsletters, flyers, and distribution of marketing information.
  • Collaborates with the recreation coordinator to brainstorm and develop new programs or classes. Creates schedules for classes and events. Creates flyers and works with the Public Information Officer (PIO) team for marketing. Manages registration for events and works with the volunteer coordinator, if necessary, for programs or events. Follows a budget and provides a list of items to purchase. Builds props for special events. Participates in special events. Creates games or booths for events. Works with outside agencies and assists with senior meal delivery.
  • Conducts regular inspections of the facility. Submits work orders for repairs. Conducts inventory of supplies, creates lists for restock, monitors for safety issues, and addresses issues promptly. Prepares set up and take down for room rentals. Initiates drill for emergency preparedness.
  • Provides information and support to participants regarding activities and events. Assists in engaging with seasonal employees, interns, or volunteers to complete tasks and assignments when needed. Helps at department special events or unit events.
  • Maintains records and manages emails, weight room certification classes, and recordings. Manages electronic and physical files related to programs, participants, and the facility.  Prepares reports on incidents and accidents.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to lift 50 pounds. Job sites are located throughout the city, and hours vary Sunday through Saturday from 6:00 am – 8:00 pm.

Some exposure to light physical or environmental conditions (noise, dust, weather, etc.)..

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Six (6) months post high school

Experience:
one (1) year of directly related experience

Equivalency:
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Up to six (6) months of experience with special events, customer service, and/or multi-tasking.
 
Previous experience in a similar role.
 
Communication and interpersonal skills, time management, ability to work well in a team setting, basic computer skills, and familiarity with recreation activities.

Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License
