Job Description Summary
Under the general supervision of the assigned Lead Mechanical Engineer, covers the fabrication and testing needs within the activities of a small mechatronics shop. Handles electrical and mechanical fabrication work based on descriptions of requested projects. Interacts with researchers, scientists, engineers, other staff, and suppliers to execute fabrication and testing of novel research devices.Job Description
The Mechatronics Technician:
Electronics Design and Fabrication
Works both independently and as part of a mechatronics team to fabricate small scale electrical and electronics systems designed by the engineering team and/or requested by researchers.
Responsible for circuit board assembly, wire harness design and fabrication, testing and evaluating performance of electrical systems.
Provides the fabrication, debugging, testing, delivery, and adjustment of new and existing electronics systems and devices.
Required to maintain all electronics parts and components as needed for fabrication.
Mechanical Design and Fabrication
Works both independently and as part of a mechatronics/machine shop unit (within a research environment) to support the design and fabrication of small- to medium-scale mechanical and physical devices requested by researchers.
Required to provide mechanical insight (viability, safety, fabrication, ease of assembly, cost control, etc.) to existing and evolving designs.
Responsible for small- to medium-scale mechanical design drawing; generally formalizing the designs of others into proper CAD/CAM form.
Required to research, determine, and source all mechanical fabrication supplies and stock material as needed.
General
Participates in the maintenance of a safe work environment through adherence to policies and procedures related to safety, fire prevention, hazard communications, security, equipment use and maintenance, infection control and vehicle safety.
Working with vendors and purchasing to submit orders on behalf of the engineering team.
Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to the Lead Mechanical Engineer of the Center for Bionic Medicine with a dotted line to the Engineering Director of the Center for Bionic Medicine.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent
A professional level of knowledge in engineering technology and fabrication acquired through experience
Two years of experience in engineering, electronics, and/or mechatronics preferred.
Experience with Python code a plus
Electronics Design and Fabrication
Skilled electronics fabrication abilities (soldering, desoldering, wiring, assembly, etc.) are necessary. Knowledge of surface mount fabrication preferred.
The ability to read and understand electrical schematics required. Experience with electrical CAD programs preferred.
Proficiency and experience with use of industry standard measurement and analysis equipment (oscilloscope, function generator, spectrum analyzer, etc.) required.
Mechanical Design and Fabrication Support
Experience with mechanical design software (CAD/CAM) preferred.
Knowledge of mechanical systems, assemblies, and machine shop fabrication processes preferred.
Ability to work with hand tools, electronic tools, and machine tools to fabricate, adjust, modify and repair devices as necessary.
Machine shop experience is an asset.
Experience with 3D printing technology, especially FDM printers required. Stratasys machine experience is a plus.
Other Requirements
Strong organizational skills.
Analytical abilities necessary to understand complex problems and to resolve these problems through the application of appropriate technologies and engineering.
Proficiency with basic personal computer systems (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc.).
Working Conditions
General laboratory setting with small electronics, mechatronics, and prosthetics facilities.
Fabrication and assembly area with occasional exposure to loud noises, unpleasant odors and dust.
Limited exposure to chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards.
Ability to move equipment and materials as needed.
Appropriate personal protective gear and environmental systems are provided.
