Director of Phase 2 Curriculum - BYU School of Medicine

Job Summary: 

The Director of Phase 2 Curriculum is a core academic leader responsible for the successful delivery and oversight of the clerkship phase of the BYU School of Medicine curriculum. This phase includes core clinical experiences in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, family medicine, psychiatry, neurology, and obstetrics and gynecology. The Director of Phase 2 Curriculum collaborates closely with clerkship directors, hospital partners, and academic leaders to ensure high-quality clinical learning experiences that are mission-aligned, spiritually grounded, and fully compliant with LCME standards. This position supports the development of students’ professional identity, clinical reasoning, and compassionate patient care, rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Depending on the applicants' clinical responsibilities, this position could be considered part-time.

Required Degree: 

MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree, with board certification.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience: 

• Demonstrated experience as a clinical educator in undergraduate medical education.
• Familiarity with the structure and requirements of the clerkship (Phase 2) curriculum.
• Ability to function in a multidisciplinary team, collaborating within hospital systems and health networks, in addition to medical educators, students, and academic partners.
• Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
• Preferred: Experience in clerkship or clinical curriculum administration.
• Preferred: Knowledge of LCME accreditation standards related to clinical education.
• Preferred: Understanding of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), competency-based assessment, and narrative evaluation.
• Preferred: Familiarity with electronic health records, clinical education platforms, and AI-based educational tools.
• Preferred: Experience in faculty development, preceptor training, or quality improvement in clinical teaching.

Duties/Expectations:

• Provide strategic and operational oversight of all Phase 2 curricular components and clinical rotations.
• Support clerkship directors in clinical site coordination, student evaluation, and learning environment management.
• Coordinate with the Senior Associate Dean of Academics, the Associate Dean of Medical Education, the Associate/Assistant Dean of Student Experience and Well-Being, and the Associate Dean of Student Progress and their staff to ensure successful progression and tracking of clinical milestones.
• Contribute to the preparation of LCME reports and curriculum maps related to Phase 2.
• Ensure consistent orientation, training, and feedback systems for students and preceptors.
• Mentor students on professional development, ethics, and identity formation during their clerkship year.
• Engage in scholarly work in medical education, clinical assessment, or practice-based research.
• Strengthen partnerships with clinical affiliates and promote mission-aligned community engagement.
• May be assigned additional responsibilities within the School of Medicine, including participation in teaching, curriculum review, committee service, and other institutional initiatives.
