Job Description

Custodial and Supply Clerk

This position is responsible for cleaning the WSC and providing support for area-related events. This includes working alongside full-time and student employees while performing all custodial functions and setups for any events that are scheduled in the building. This position may help train part-time employees on the proper safety protocols and use of equipment and chemicals established for the needs of the area. Responsibilities include mentoring, safety, cleanliness, customer service and following directions from supervisors.

Note: This is a part-time position (28 hours per week).

What you’ll do in this position:

Cleaning of the WSC and Providing Support Services

  • Maintain cleanliness of the WSC by working alongside part-time employees
  • Mentor, teach, train and motivate part-time employees when necessary
  • Help provide guidance and training on chemical and equipment use through proper cleaning techniques
  • Have proper setups completed on time and ensure cleanup after the event
  • Schedule after-hours study rooms for students if rooms are available
  • Conduct orderly evacuation of the WSC in case of fire alarm or other emergency if direct supervisor is not available

Perform Daily Inspections of the WSC

  • Perform daily cleanliness inspections of the WSC
  • Identify and report maintenance problems in the Daily Building Report. Contact BYU Police after hours for maintenance emergencies.
  • Occasionally make rounds to verify compliance of fire, safety, security, and building policies. Lock and unlock doors as needed according to the scheduling report. Clear rooms when reserved event time has expired.
  • Assist in making assignments to part-time employees as needed to address any issues that arise
  • Help manage public relations and customer service with patrons and employees.

As Needed, Provide Opportunity for Employee Growth and Development

  • Help provide opportunities for the professional development of part-time employees
  • Help guide the development of part-time employees by teaching, training, and keeping good records
  • Communicate effectively with part-time employees about job responsibilities
  • Help ensure that BYU dress and grooming standards are being practiced

Seek Personal and Professional Development

  • Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences when appropriate to improve job and leadership skills
  • Engage in personal study of administrative and skill development materials
  • Become trained on any requirements provided through HR under direction of your supervisor
  • Participate in any training as related to required job skills

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Knowledge of building care equipment and its use and application for specific cleaning needs.
  • Competent and knowledgeable in all aspects of cleaning and able to teach and train part-time employees in all aspects of their job
  • Knowledgeable in basic computer skills and necessary paperwork such as timecards, logbooks, inventories, supply orders, Supervisor Incident reports, Hazcom training sheet and inspections.

Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.

Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather conditions, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters.

Physical Requirements

  • Noise from leaf blower — 20 min to 1 hour, up to 5 days per week, hearing protection devices
  • Work outside in winter shoveling snow — 20 min to 2 hours, depends on snowfall, gloves/coat/headgear
  • Work in wet conditions cleaning restrooms — 30 minutes, up to 10 times per day, goggles/gloves
  • Vacuuming, running floor machines, buffers — 2 to 4 hours, 5 days a week, hearing protection
  • Genie lift — 1 to 2 hours, 1–2 times a week, harness
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals — 8 hours, 5 days a week, goggles/gloves/dust mask
  • Lifting tables, chairs, riser stairs — 2 to 4 hours, 5 days a week, gloves
  • Climbing ladders for cleaning or changing light bulbs — 30 min, daily, glasses/gloves
  • Moving offices and furniture for cleaning — 1 hour, monthly, gloves/glasses
  • High and low work (stretching, reaching, pushing, pulling) — 1 hour, daily, gloves/glasses
  • Stripping, waxing, mopping, carpet cleaning, and related physical activities — 2 hours, daily, gloves/glasses

Preferred

  • Two years’ professional experience
  • Bachelor’s degree

Pay Grade: 47

Typical Starting Pay: $19.00 - $24.00
