Custodial Specialist – WSC (Part-time)

This position represents Campus Life Support Services to the diverse patrons of the Wilkinson Student Center. It works closely with the WSC Custodial Supervisor to elevate the experience of customers who are both affiliated and unaffiliated with the university. It does this by helping to maintain a well-manicured facility, preparing event set up spaces for patron use, and quickly responding to various patron issues and requests.

Note: This is a part-time position (28) hours per week requiring availability for the night shift scheduled between 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM.

What you’ll do in this position:

Maintenance of the WSC’s Appearance

  • Maintain daily cleanliness of over 380,000 ft² of the WSC to ensure the building looks inviting and well cared for
  • Clean and organize public spaces, including furniture, tables, ottomans, and removal of fliers and equipment
  • Regularly clean carpets and polish Terrazzo surfaces
  • Occasionally maintain an additional 25,000 ft² of maintenance and HVAC space and identify areas needing extra attention

Event Set-up

  • Provide equipment and prepare spaces for more than 12,000 events annually, ranging from small study spaces to large churchwide events
  • Maintain over 64,000 ft² of event room space and set up equipment for scheduled events

Building and Event Support

  • Unlock and secure rooms for events and assist with building safety, maintenance needs, and evacuations
  • Prepare the building for Wards and Stakes meetings on Sundays and attend to Ward and Stake needs, including occasional Sunday work

Personal Development

  • Attend approved workshops and seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills and methods

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.

Physical Effort

  • Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.

Environment

  • Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters

Hazards

  • Moderate existing or potential hazards

Physical Requirements:

  • Noise from leaf blower: 20 min. to 1 hour; up to 5 days per week
  • Work outside in winter shoveling snow: 20 min. to 2 hours; depends on snowfall
  • Work in wet conditions cleaning restrooms: 30 minutes; up to 10 times per day
  • Vacuuming, running floor machines, buffers: 2 hours to 4 hours; 5 days a week
  • Genie® lift: 1 hour to 2 hours; 1–2 times a week
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals: 8 hours; 5 days a week
  • Lifting tables, chairs, riser stairs: 2 hours to 4 hours; 5 days a week
  • Climbing ladders for cleaning, changing light bulbs, etc.: 30 min; daily
  • Moving offices and other furniture for cleaning purposes: 1 hour; monthly
  • High and low work (stretching, reaching, pushing, pulling, etc.): 1 hour; daily

Preferred

  • Two years’ professional experience
  • Bachelor’s degree

Pay Grade: 46

Typical Starting Pay: $17.00 - $21.50 per hour
