The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence- based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.

Nurse Transition to Practice Program:
At Sentara, we are dedicated to helping our nurses succeed from day one. Our 12-week Nurse Transition to Practice program is designed for nurses new to critical care, blending hands-on training, professional development, and mentorship to build the skills and confidence needed for a successful critical care nursing career. The program combines classroom learning with preceptor-led unit orientation. It includes 8 sessions featuring live simulations, case studies, and problem-based learning. Key topics covered include patient assessment, respiratory and cardiac care, vasoactive medications, hemodynamics, invasive monitoring, post-op care, sedation, and effective communication with providers and families.
