The Marmon Group LLC

As a part of the global industrial organization Marmon Holdings—which is backed by Berkshire Hathaway—you’ll be doing things that matter, leading at every level, and winning a better way. We’re committed to making a positive impact on the world, providing you with diverse learning and working opportunities, and fostering a culture where everyone’s empowered to be their best.

Marmon is seeking a current student majoring in either industrial or mechanical engineering who is interested in gaining industrial manufacturing and process engineering experience as part of a Co-Op arrangement. The ideal candidate must be inquisitive, energetic, and able to run end-to-end projects. You’ll scope, plan, and deliver hands-on engineering projects that improve safety, quality, delivery, and cost while staying adaptable to the real-time needs of the shop floor.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Project-based engineering (primary focus 50-60%)

  • Identify improvement opportunities, build business cases and lead projects from problem definition through pilot and full production handoff.
  • Plan tasks, timelines and budgets; manage risks and stakeholders
  • Use data (SPC, Pareto, time studies) to create baselines, model benefits, and verify results post-implementation.

Production support & adaptability (secondary focus 20-30%)

  • Be a visible, reliable presence on the floor.
  • Triage line issues quickly. Collaborate with operators, supervisors, quality and maintenance and balance short-term fixes with long-term solutions.
  • Flex your schedule to support trials, changeovers

Design & process engineering (tertiary focus 10-20%)

  • Create/modify 3D models and drawings (e.g., SolidWorks/Creo), GD&T, tolerance stacks, basic fixtures/EOAT, and DFM/DFA input to product teams.
  • Develop/optimize standardized work, routings, cell layouts, PFMEAs/control plans, error-proofing, and automation/fixturing to reduce waste and variability.

Extra LEAN Opportunity (5-10%)

  • Lead kaizen events; reduce cycle time, changeover time, and scrap; improve first-pass yield and on-time delivery.
  • Documentation & compliance
  • Author clear SOPs, work instructions, and training materials.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • Pursuing B.S. in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics, or related engineering field.
  • Practical familiarity with at least a few of the following: CAD (SolidWorks/Creo/Inventor), GD&T, basic statistics/SPC, time studies, PFMEA, control plans, root cause (5-Why/8D/Fishbone), Lean/6S.
  • Comfortable using data tools (Excel/Sheets, basic Python/SQL/Power BI a plus) to analyze problems and demonstrate impact.
  • Strong communication—able to translate between operators, engineers, and leaders—and proven bias for action on the floor.

Additional “nice to have” qualifications:

  • Experience with PLC/HMI basics, sensors/vision, or cobots/robotics.
  • Hands-on fab skills (machining, 3D printing, metrology/CMM).
  • Exposure to NPI/APQP/PPAP or medical/aerospace/automotive regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with safety risk assessments and ergonomics

Pay Range:

18.00 - 27.00
