Why This Role Matters
The Cataloguer plays a vital role in the preparation and execution of auctions and private sales within the Decorative Arts department. The position supports departmental specialists through rigorous research, accurate cataloguing, and the coordination of sale preparation, ensuring objects are presented with scholarly authority, market relevance, and operational efficiency.
How You'll Make an Impact
Research & Cataloguing
Conduct detailed research on objects spanning the Decorative Arts, including provenance, literature, comparative examples, and exhibition history, using internal databases, libraries, and external experts.
Draft, edit, and proof catalogue entries, condition notes, and extended essays in line with Christie’s editorial and scholarly standards.
Assist specialists in assessing authenticity, dating, attribution, and market positioning of property.
Prepare and update condition reports in collaboration with specialists and conservators.
Auction & Sale Preparation
Coordinate photography, conservation and other requirements in line with sale schedules.
Support the layout, image selection and production of auction catalogues and online content.
Assist with pre-sale exhibitions, including object installation, labelling, and client-facing activity during preview and sale weeks.
Participate in cataloguing and ‘hilling’ sessions, ensuring amendments are accurately captured and approved.
Client & Departmental Support
Respond to internal and external enquiries, providing research material, images, and documentation as required.
Maintain departmental archives, research files, and sale records.
Liaise closely with internal teams including Marketing, Legal, Prepress, and Operations to ensure accuracy, compliance, and consistency across all materials.
Due Diligence & Compliance
Ensure all cataloguing and object documentation complies with relevant cultural property legislation, including EU Regulation 2019/880 where applicable.
Maintain and update provenance records and internal tracking documentation.
Identify, flag, and escalate any provenance, authenticity, or compliance concerns promptly in collaboration with specialists and the Legal department.
What you’ll bring to the team
Bachelor’s Degree.
Previous experience (typically 1–3 years) in an auction house, museum, gallery, or academic context preferred.
Strong research and writing skills, with the ability to balance scholarly precision and commercial awareness.
Aptitude in foreign languages is an advantage.
Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Collaborative, proactive, and adaptable, with a willingness to support colleagues across the department.

Salary: £31,000 - £32,000 per annum
