Job Description:
About Fairfield University:
Fairfield University is a co-educational, comprehensive Jesuit university with a 200-acre campus located along the scenic shoreline community of Fairfield, CT. The University is comprised of approximately 5,400 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students pursuing degrees within five schools: The John Charles Meditz College of Arts and Sciences, The Charles F. Dolan School of Business, The School of Engineering, The Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, and School of Education and Human Development. As an expression of our Jesuit, Catholic mission and identity, Fairfield embraces a liberal humanistic approach to education, encouraging critical thinking, cultivating free and open inquiry, and fostering ethical and religious values.
Job Description:
The Biology Department at Fairfield University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in Health Studies beginning Fall 2026, pending final budget approval. Fairfield’s Health Studies Program is a large interdisciplinary minor that gives students the opportunity to learn about the complex issues related to the current and future environment of contemporary healthcare. Applicants who use computational data science, biomedical analytics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and/or artificial intelligence to study human health and disease are especially encouraged to apply. The candidate must be able to actively incorporate undergraduate students into their research program. Teaching responsibilities may include Introduction to Health Studies, a Health Studies Capstone and an upper division Biology course in the candidate’s area of expertise. The teaching load is typically three undergraduate courses per semester with a possible course reduction to accommodate for leadership roles and responsibilities. In addition to serving on Fairfield University’s Health Studies Steering Committee and rotations as Director of the Health Studies Program, the candidate will also be expected to be active in service to the department, University, and other professional communities.
Requirements:
Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field by August 2026, show a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, and demonstrate the potential to develop an active and sustainable research program with undergraduate research students. The ideal candidate will have post-doctoral experience, experience teaching at the undergraduate level, evidence of peer-reviewed scholarly accomplishments, and an understanding and commitment to educating undergraduate students in the liberal arts tradition, a hallmark of Jesuit education.
Additional Information:
The Biology department consists of 24 full-time faculty representing a range of specialties and is housed in the Bannow Science Center. The Biology department has a vibrant culture of undergraduate student-faculty collaboration in research, regular departmental extra-curricular events and guest lectures, and a large student interest in the health sciences. The salary and benefits for the position are highly competitive.
