Department Description:

The Academic & Career Advising Center (ACAC) provides comprehensive major exploration and career development services for students to inspire long-term success. Our Academic Advisers and Career Coaches assist students in developing educational and career plans to discover who they are, where they are going, and how to locate and navigate relevant experiences leading to a fulfilling career path.

Position Description:

We seek a diverse group of peer advisers to help us achieve our mission to serve as a model for excellence in academic and career advising by partnering with students to help them develop a clear sense of self and their academic and career goals. We aim to provide a coordinated and responsive approach to student needs which serves as the foundation for success at UWSP and beyond.

Advising/Mentoring

Lead group meetings with first-year and new transfer students. These meetings include information about the requirements of the General Education Program, resources available to students related to advising and registration, and major/career exploration resources. Assist students individually with questions about accesSPoint and the registration process. Meet individually with students to assist them in understanding and applying self-guided assessments (e.g. 16 Personalities or other informal career assessments). Assist students with the development of their job search skills, including resumes and Handshake.

Outreach

Assist with outreach events planned by the Academic and Career Advising Center staff, such as career programs, prospective student events, or group advising meetings. Assist with efforts to increase educational and promotional materials for the Academic and Career Advising Center offices, including developing marketing materials and making bulletin boards. Help the Academic and Career Advising Center staff best utilize technology to connect with students. Conduct educational workshops for student organizations and students in the residence halls as opportunities arise.

Administration

Attend weekly staff meetings. Meet with the ACAC Peer Adviser supervisor and other office staff, as needed. Complete requested paperwork in a timely manner. Work on office projects as requested. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 semesters completed at UWSP by the end of fall semester 2025
  • Cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or above
  • Strong communication skills
  • Desire to help other students
  • Ability to work with confidential information
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Understanding and appreciation of various cultures and backgrounds
  • Commitment to work an average of 6-8 hours per week throughout the spring 2026 semester, preference for commitment through the 2026-2027 academic year.
