Job Summary:

Students working in this position will assist researchers with specified lab or field work. The department is looking for hard working, dependable students who are interested in assisting with conducting scientific research. 

Job Duties:

Laboratory:
• Experience with laboratory research/scientific SOPs/scientific instrumentation
• Students will be provided with specialized training immediately upon hire so that they may conduct their work safely and effectively
• Prepare food and water for organism cultures and renew organism cultures
• Perform general lab maintenance
• Perform laboratory equipment calibrations
• Preparation of laboratory reagents and standards
• Sample collection and analysis
• Preparation of sample bottles and labels 
• Recordkeeping
• Data entry and proofing of data
• Running toxicity tests
• Use of centrifuge and autoclave
• Preparation of filters for sample analysis
• Homogenization of biotic tissue prior to digestion
• Perform metals digestions with supervision
• Preparation of agar plates and media
• Use of microscope to collect organisms from samples
• Use of camera mounted on microscope to photograph specimens
• Works independently with minimal supervision
• May have key to access laboratory on weekends for culture care
• Other duties as assigned

Field: 
• Experience with field research/scientific SOPs/scientific instrumentation
• Specialized training in field research and field safety
• Ability to receive approval to drive university vehicles
• Collection and documentation of biological, physical and chemical data
• Perform general maintenance and preparation of field equipment; including best management practices for controlling transfer of invasive species
• Perform field equipment calibrations
• Experience in non-motorized watercraft (canoes, kayaks, etc.)
• Routine quality checks and assistance with data analysis
• Data entry and proofing
• Experience using cameras and GPS units
• Works independently with minimal supervision
• May have keys to LSRI field storage areas and laboratories
• Other duties as assigned
 

Minimum Qualifications:

-Enrolled at half-time status at UWS 
-Students must be enrolled for fall courses to be eligible for work over the summer months
-Strong attention to detail
-Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
-Willing to work evenings, weekends, holidays
