Position Summary and Qualifications:

Saint Joseph’s University’s Department of Art & Art History has a need for highly qualified adjunct faculty to teach Photography courses on a semester-by-semester basis. Likely assignments include introductory and intermediate digital photography and darkroom courses, depending on departmental needs.

Part-time adjunct faculty will teach assigned photography courses, support student learning, and foster an inclusive, studio-focused classroom environment. Course assignments may vary each semester and may encompass a range of photographic practices, including digital image-making, lighting, and traditional black-and-white darkroom processes. Instructors are expected to bring contemporary professional insight and strong technical and conceptual knowledge to the classroom.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching assigned photography course(s), including digital and/or darkroom instruction
  • Preparing course materials, assignments, and assessments
  • Demonstrating proper use of photographic equipment, lighting, and darkroom facilities
  • Providing guidance, feedback, and mentorship to students
  • Holding regular office hours
  • Reporting mid-semester and final grades electronically
  • Using Canvas or another learning management system
  • Maintaining consistent communication with students

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participating in occasional meetings with the Department Chair or program faculty
  • Collaborating with course coordinators to ensure curricular consistency and quality
  • Supporting departmental goals related to student learning and engagement
  • Assisting in maintaining a safe and effective studio and darkroom environment

Minimum Requirements:

  • MFA in Photography or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in both digital photography and traditional darkroom processes
  • Professional experience in photography or related creative fields
  • Proficiency with industry-standard software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, including Lightroom and Photoshop)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior college-level teaching experience
  • Experience managing or working in a darkroom environment
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in adapting course content to meet the needs of students with varied backgrounds
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Experience with studio lighting, alternative processes, or contemporary photographic practices
