Job Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under direction of Supervisor, Grounds Maintenance, oversees and participates in the work of assigned personnel engaged in maintaining airport grounds. Specific tasks may vary by area of assignment and seasonal demands.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees and participates in the work of assigned personnel engaged in grounds maintenance activities, including maintenance and installation of turf, trees, shrubs, ground cover, litter removal, pest control and other various moving projects.
  • Transports assigned personnel to designated locations and ensures they are properly stocked/restocked with tools, equipment and supplies to perform scheduled tasks.
  • Monitors workers throughout the day; ensures assigned tasks are completed; reassigns personnel and equipment, as needed.
  • Ensures that equipment is properly operated and maintained in safe working order and that all safety regulations are observed.
  • Provides input and prepares daily work schedules, employee performance evaluations, ordering of supplies; completes logs, forms and reports.
  • Trains assigned personnel.
  • Operates manual and powered tools and equipment common to the assignment and oversees their care and maintenance. Principal activities include mowing, weedeating, trimming and spraying.
  • Directs and oversees mowing operations on the Aircraft Operations Area.
  • Repairs and patches tires on maintenance equipment and blows radiators, as required.
  • May assist in the observation, evaluation, and treatment of pests including weeds, insects, diseases, rodents and birds.
  • May perform manual labor such as moving furniture, boxes, and other items as well as setup for special events and holidays.
  • Oversee and participate in foul weather operations on the Aircraft Operations Area and land side.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years experience in construction, landscaping, groundskeeping or mowing.
  • Experience in operating a variety of maintenance equipment.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial driver's license with airbrake certification or ability to obtain one within designated probation period.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics of powered and mobile grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and its operation.
  • Knowledge of the field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
  • Skill in the operation and field servicing of grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine field maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and to communicate clearly over two-way radio.
  • Ability to complete routine forms and reports.
  • Ability to make independent judgments.
  • Ability to identify required tasks, task priorities and needed resources.
  • Ability to plan, organize and monitor assigned employees' work to accomplish unit objectives.
  • Ability to identify training needs and train assigned personnel.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This is a DOT-designated and Airport-designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
  • Must have a good private driving record: (a) no more than two (2) convictions of moving violations in the last 36 months and (b) no DWI convictions in the last 60 months.

EFFORT

  • Works in a maintenance environment.
  • Works outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather and in conditions containing dust, fumes and noise.
  • Operates powered and mobile grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Performs manual labor, frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Works in awkward positions such as stooping, squatting or kneeling; walks for prolonged periods of time.
  • Uses manual and powered tools.
  • Uses near-visual acuity in reading written documents.
  • Uses far-visual acuity in driving vehicle/equipment.
  • Uses reasoning in estimating and problem solving.
  • Performs basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction and multiplication.
  • Exchanges information by two-way radio and in person.
  • Drives to locations on Airport property; transports workers to designated locations.
