GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general direction of the Pavement Supervisor, oversees and participates in the work activities of assigned personnel engaged in maintaining, repairing and laying concrete and asphalt surfaces, controlling erosion and maintaining storm drains and flumes. Specific tasks may vary by area of assignment and seasonal demands.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees and participates in the work of assigned personnel engaged in maintaining, repairing, and laying concrete and asphalt surfaces, erosion control, cleaning and maintaining storm drains and flumes and snow removal.
- Ensures assigned personnel are properly stocked/restocked with tools, equipment and supplies to perform scheduled tasks.
- Monitors worker activity throughout the day; ensures assigned tasks are completed; reassigns personnel and equipment as needed; ensures safety regulations are observed.
- Operates the following types of powered or mobile equipment and vehicles in maintaining concrete and asphalt surfaces: 2 1/2- and 5 - ton dump trucks, sweepers, backhoe, crack sealing machine, grader, dozer, track loader, box blade, rubber tire loader, mudjack machine and pavement scrubber.
- Provides input in the preparation of daily work schedules, employee performance evaluations, ordering of supplies; completes logs, forms and reports.
- Provides on-the-job training for assigned personnel.
- May perform manual labor such as moving furniture and boxes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
- Three (3) years experience in construction, landscaping, grounds keeping or mowing; any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted.
- Experience in operating a variety of paving construction equipment.
- One (1) year in a lead capacity.
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial driver's license or ability to obtain one within a designated probation period.
- Must have a good private driving record: (a) no more than two (2) convictions of moving violations in the last 36 months and (b) no DWI convictions in the last 60 months.
- This is a DOT-designated and Airport-designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the operating characteristics of powered and mobile paving construction equipment.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
- Knowledge of the field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
- Skill in the operation and field servicing of paving construction equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and to communicate clearly over two-way radio.
- Ability to complete routine forms and reports.
- Ability to make independent judgments.
- Ability to identify required tasks, task priorities and needed resources.
- Ability to plan, organize, train and monitor assigned employees' work assignments to accomplish unit objectives.
- Ability to make adjustments and perform routine field maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Ability to train and direct equipment operators.
- Ability to operate equipment that requires a high degree of manipulative skill.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather.
- Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
- Ability to drive in Aircraft Movement Area and/or obtain certification to drive in the Aircraft Movement Area.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- This is a designated Essential Employee position as defined in DFW Airport’s Categories and Classifications Administrative Policy and Procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation.

- Uses near-visual acuity in reading written documents.
- Uses far-visual acuity in driving vehicle/equipment.
- Performs manual labor, frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds.
- Uses reasoning in problem-solving.
- Performs basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Exchanges information by telephone, two-way radio and in person.
- Drives to locations on Airport property.
