Job Description:

Performs food service work in the County's food service program for older citizens. The work involves making arrangements for meal service, serving meals, keeping records, and kitchen/service area clean-up work.  The work requires prior food service experience, and the work is reviewed by a supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

Ensures Health Department regulations for kitchen, food service, and food sanitation are met and temperature of ovens, refrigeration and freezer are correct.

Opens kitchen, makes coffee, heats water for tea, and sets out snacks in the morning.

Receives and checks for proper temperature of incoming food and ensures that the proper food temperatures are maintained and recorded.

Puts food in refrigerator or heat wells and records temperature of food.

Serves lunch on time.

May provide the weekly meal count to the caterer for the center(s) or provide to another staff member.

May make announcements and provide information.

Puts food away.  Washes and sanitizes pots, pans, and utensils as well as serving and dining areas.

May clean bulk containers and ice chests for the center and Meals on Wheels.

Counts lunch money with assistance of a senior citizen.

Prepares daily reservation sheets and inputs statistics into a computer.

Writes articles for newspaper and newsletter for special programs offered by the nutrition program.

Accepts and returns phone calls for lunch reservations.

May send supplies, i.e. disposables to the other centers as needed for the lunch program.

Conducts inventory of nutrition supplies and ensures adequate supplies are available.  May submit requests to order supplies to be used at all centers.

Maintains storage room(s) stocked with inventory required for the nutrition program.

Works with the program and agency staff on programs/activities that require coordination with the nutrition program. 

Offers recommendations for menus or changes as appropriate.

Ensures kitchen is clean if an outside program has used kitchen.

Delivers Meals on Wheels when needed.

Works with Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Completes periodic and occasional maintenance (e.g., scrub kitchen including refrigeration/oven units and stainless steel).

Assists with special center and agency programs.

Provides nutrition education and/or nutritional information to senior participants several times a year.

Provides good customer service.

Other Duties

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Knowledge of--

  • Kitchen and bulk meal operations with at risk populations.
  • Proper methods and procedures of food handling and serving.
  • Knowledge of health hazards in food service activities and of necessary precautions.
  • Knowledge and experience of cleaning methods and procedures required by the local Health Department.
  • Knowledge and experience of inventory control and first in/first out.

Ability to--

  • Understand and perform monitoring of the Critical Control Points in conjunction with a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Plan.
  • Operate a variety of cooking and cleaning equipment.
  • Multitask between various kitchen activities.
  • Maintain several financial accounts associated with the food service program. Must be able to make arithmetic computations quickly and accurately.
  • Use a database system to input information and experience with record keeping and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Deal effectively with the public.
  • Perform all the duties required for this position independently.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

Two years of progressive food experience which includes working with health inspections, Critical Control Points, calibrating thermometers, documentation and bulk food experience.

One year of experience with recordkeeping, documentation, and database entry.

Six month experience managing several financial accounts.

Licenses or Certificates:

Valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age.

Current sanitation management certification.

Operation of County owned vehicle.

Physical Demands:

Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds.

Unusual Demands:

Workers are exposed to dirt and soil.

FLSA Status:

Nonexempt

Compensation Steps:

Pay rate: $25.50 per hour

Grade 718, part-time position with benefits, 25 hours per week
