Job Description:
The Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation is hiring a Park Supervisor for the Parks & Safety Division to oversee countywide park operations during evenings, weekends, and holidays. This role manages staff across multiple sites, ensures smooth activities and events, and maintains a safe, welcoming environment for patrons.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for coordinating with staff, visitors, and community groups. The Park Supervisor also makes weather-related event decisions, handles large crowds, and adapts to last-minute changes or strict deadlines while providing excellent customer service.
Performs building and grounds maintenance work at various County facilities. Work involves supervising merit employees, seasonal and hourly workers, and community service workers and direct hands on involvement in maintaining and repairing County buildings and facilities and/or assisting with the physical set up of various events and activities the County sponsors throughout the year. Performs building maintenance, building cleaning, outdoor maintenance and landscaping activities. Work involves performing general building repairs, welding, fabrication, painting and cleaning of County facilities and grounds and may involve installation of necessary equipment. Work requires ability to follow instructions. Work is performed under close to general supervision depending on assignment.
Essential Job Functions
Working supervisor engaged in facility maintenance and repair work: assigns and reviews facilities maintenance work, and takes actions to adjust work, staffing and operations to meet requirements; trains staff in procedures; participates in and initiates actions regarding hiring, payroll, leave, performance, and other personnel actions.
Performs ground maintenance to include lawn cutting, trimming, edging, fertilizing and seeding, pruning trees and shrubbery, mulching around trees and bushes. Maintains flower beds at various areas. Unloads pallets of lime and fertilizer from trucks. Maintains lawn care equipment. Maintains satellite facilities.
Maintains sports fields; lines and drags baseball/softball fields; lays out ball fields for various sports activities; fertilizes, sprays pesticides, and aerates all fields (where applicable).
Welds, fabricates, maintains, and repairs loaders, tractors, powered sprayers, detachers and related equipment; performs major equipment repairs on mowers, tractors, power sprayers, gators, hand-held equipment, etc.; applies automotive paint and refinishes and removes dents.
Inspects playground equipment, basketball/tennis courts; makes playground repairs.
Answers questions, resolves issues, and directs the public in use of facilities.
Communicates daily with supervisor, employees, and contractors; uses computer to prepare daily reports, respond to emails, and review facility schedules.
Empties outside trash receptacles and keeps grounds clear of debris.
Monitors HVAC systems (mechanical and computerized) as assigned.
Changes building light bulbs, repairs pumps, filtration systems.
Completes various painting projects both indoors and outdoors (spackling, sanding, priming).
Repairs flush valves, plumbing fixtures, roofs, fountains and picnic tables; repairs decks, handrails, fencing systems and athletic fields; installs and repairs chain link, split rail, and picket fencing.
Snowplows roads and parking lots and shovels and salts walkways; maintains snow removal equipment.
Reports to appropriate authority if anything is broken or leaks or pole lights go out.
Moves furniture. Sets up tents for special activities.
Assists in building exhibits or other items useful to the public.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)
Training and/or Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience:
Three years of building and grounds maintenance experience.
Licenses or Certificates:
Valid driver’s license.
A current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations is required. Must be obtained within six months of employment.
Valid Class B commercial driver’s license may be required.
Valid Certified Pesticide Applicator Certificate or must obtain within six months of employment.
Valid Professional Fertilizer Application Certificate or must obtain within six months of employment.
Special Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age.
Operation of a County owned vehicle.
May be subject to alcohol and drug testing.
Subject to background investigation.
Physical Demands:
Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
Unusual Demands:
Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, and hazards from working with waste material.
Subject to call in or remaining on the job for emergencies.
FLSA Status:
Nonexempt
Compensation Steps:
Pay rate: $25.50 - $27.31 per hour; $46,410 - $49,704 annually
Grade 718, full-time position, 35 hours per week
