Job Description:
The Aquatic Operations Specialist performs management and administrative duties assisting the Aquatics Division Chief to ensure smooth and efficient operation of aquatic facilities. The Aquatic Operations Specialist has primary responsibility for the operation of the outdoor aquatic facilities, supervision of seasonal Aquatics Division staff, and facility maintenance. Facilities maintenance involves inspecting, maintaining, and repairing the facility and a variety of equipment to include pool heaters, pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, chemical feed systems, storage tanks, valves, and pool fittings. The incumbent must ensure that pool operations are compliant with local, state, and federal requirements. Moreover, the position is responsible for hiring, recruiting, training, and supervising seasonal staff. Work involves assisting with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of aquatic programs. The position works under direct supervision.
Essential Job Functions
Supervises staff engaged in aquatics facilities; assigns and reviews work, and takes actions to adjust work, staffing, and operations to meet requirements; trains staff in new policies and procedures.
Oversees day to day operation of aquatic facilities to include maintenance, monetary transactions, repairs, and responds to emergency incidents.
Ensures that pool systems operate in accordance with mandated local, state, and federal requirements by inspecting, maintaining, and repairing pool heaters, pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, chemical feed systems, storage tanks, valves, and pool fittings.
Interviews applicants, selects or recommends new hires, counsels employees, recommends disciplinary actions, evaluates staff at various facilities, and enforces agency and County policies and procedures.
Plans, conducts, and coordinates staff safety trainings to include in-service trainings, certification courses, and division-wide emergency training.
Coordinates programs and activities with other units and helps alleviate delays and problems promptly.
Devises work processes and implements them to achieve established goals and objectives.
Responds to and answers all public inquiries and addresses and resolves complaints.
Maintains all licenses for aquatics facilities and staff to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws as they pertain to aquatic facilities.
Corresponds and coordinates with contractors for various facility repairs.
Maintains manual or automated records for all emergency incidents and maintenance repairs.
Prepares a variety of management statistical reports at the direction of the Division Chief.

Training and/or Education:
Associate’s Degree desirable in recreation or a related field.
Experience:
Three years of aquatics experience to include one year in a supervisory capacity that includes managing staff, daily pool operations, customer service, procedure development, and implementation and monitoring compliance of various policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
Licenses or Certificates:
Valid driver’s license.
American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/First Aid certification.
Calvert County pool operator's license (must be obtained within three months of employment).
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification (must be obtained within six months of employment).
Special Requirements:
Operation of County-owned vehicle.
Subject to background investigation.
Physical Demands:
Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking outdoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, ladder climbing, recurrent lifting of objects up to 50 pounds; and sustained operation of keyboard devices.
Hazards:
Exposure to chemicals, sewage, trash, animal feces, human feces, alcohol, various pests, patron illness, equipment repairs, ladder climbing. Working around moving equipment, power tools, significant weather events, unruly or intoxicated patrons.
Unusual Demands:
Subject to call in, required to work weekends, evening, holidays, or to remain on the job for staffing compliance with various regulations or needs.
Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, hazards from exposure to pool chemicals, working at heights, and confined spaces.
Work is subject to deadlines and frequent interruptions.

Compensation Steps:
Pay rate: $29.80 - $34.16 per hour; $54,236 - $62,171 annually
Grade 721, full-time position, 35 hours per week
