Job Description:
The Pest Management Specialist position involves significant physical demands and requires the ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions. Duties include crouching, crawling, and performing tasks outdoors in adverse weather. The role may involve exposure to stings and bites, handling and applying chemicals in accordance with safety guidelines, and the disposal of animal carcasses.
To provide an environmentally controlled basis for the containment of mosquitoes throughout the County and all pest control in County operated facilities. The Pest Management Specialist will inspect designated areas to determine numbers and types of pest present and apply measures for elimination.
Essential Job Functions
Identifies and treats insects and other pests; surveys for disease activity.
Compiles, processes, and records data that relates to pesticide applications and disease surveillance in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Assists the public, clientele, and others in accessing and making use of unit services by advising them regarding their needs and services provided.
Operates, checks, and maintains vehicles and pesticide applicator equipment to ensure safe working condition; adheres to assigned routes and schedules.
Maintains and distributes surveillance equipment.
Responds courteously to citizen complaints and information requests.
Maintains inventory supplies.
Handles and processes animal cadavers according to appropriate methods.

Makes educational presentations to groups and classes regarding program activities, insect biology and integrated pest management.
Makes recommendations for mosquito and pest control budgets.
Loads aircraft with pesticides for application.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)
Knowledge of--
The operation and care of light pick-up truck and ATV type vehicles; operation and care of larviciding equipment.
The measurement of area and other geometrical calculations.
Insect biology and aquatic habitats.
Use of insect keys.
Ability to--
Read and understand chemical labels; mix chemicals according to chemical labels.
Correctly calibrate pesticide application equipment.
Train others in work.
Follow routes and time schedules.
Read odometer and similar meters and dials, and to record such readings.
Communicate with citizens concerning assigned duties and general program operations; make educational presentations to groups.
Deal effectively with the public.
Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)
Training and/or Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in computers, biology and/or environmental science.
Experience:
Three years of experience in pest control, at least one of which is in Public Health (e.g., pest control involving mosquitos).
Licenses or Certificates:
Valid driver's license.
Special Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age.
Operation of County owned vehicle.
Certified Pesticide Applicator in Category 8 (Public Health). Must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
Physical Demands:
Work requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds.
Unusual Demands:
Required to work non-standard work schedules that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Subject to exposure to pesticides and other toxins, insect bites, and stings.

Nonexempt
Compensation Steps:
Pay rate: $24.51 - $26.29 per hour; $44,608 - $47,848 annually
Grade 717, full-time position, 35 hours per week
