Job Description
Job Summary:
The Biltmore House Historic Interpreter–Seasonal is in constant contact with Biltmore House & Amherst guests and is their main source of information and assistance. Staff must remain aware of the safety of guests and fellow employees, and the safety and security of the House and collection. Biltmore House Historic Interpreter-Seasonal staff will be expected to certify for specific Biltmore House & Amherst duties for which the department is responsible. This includes, but is not limited to: guest interaction both inside and outside of Biltmore House, working Amherst exhibit and the audio tour operations. The staff will also provide general assistance and support for the leadership, department and company.
Please note that this is a seasonal position, scheduled from October 1, 2025, through January 10, 2026. Based on performance and business needs, there may be an opportunity to be considered for a permanent role at the end of the season, should one be available.
Reserve: A flexible, on-call position scheduled based on business needs and operational volume. Reserve employees typically work anywhere from 40-999 hours per year, depending on demand. Weekend and evening availability are required for this role.
Essential Job Duties:
1. Will train for specific jobs in Biltmore House and Amherst.
2. Welcomes, orients, checks, verifies and scans tickets for all guests entering Biltmore House & Amherst while presenting a welcoming and helpful demeanor.
3. Is always looking for opportunities to pro-actively interact with guests, while ensuring guests adhere to Biltmore House & Amherst policies.
4. Is actively looking for opportunities to assist guests with special needs, House wheelchair use, Elevator use, side-door access and exit, strollers, etc.
5. Involved in all aspects of Biltmore House audio tour operation including, but not limited to: distribution, collection, cleaning & stocking of audio wands. Knowledge of Group Guided System (GGS) for tour use.
6. Ability to effectively communicate on company radio system.
7. Maintains awareness to insure safety of guests, employees, Biltmore House and the collection & Amherst exhibit. Responds to various alarms as directed by Security.
8. Knows proper security procedures and Emergency Action Plan.
9. Demonstrates a continual and growing depth and breadth of knowledge of Biltmore House, Amherst & Estate.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Communicates clearly and concisely with guests.
2. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Biltmore Estate & Amherst.
3. May assist with various events and special functions across the Estate.
4. Maintains certification proficiencies.
5. Provides general assistance and support for the department, leadership and company.
Qualifications:
1. Current High school (or GED) students or graduates required. Additional training, education and/or certification(s) preferred.
2. Related experience in a public contact, customer service, hospitality, teaching or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education/experience considered. Instructional delivery experience a plus.
3. Demonstrated commitment to delivery of world class internal/external guest service.
4. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; ability to convey information clearly, concisely and effectively; public speaking and/or storytelling skills a huge plus; ability to welcome and engage guests in a warm and genuine manner.
5. Ability to quickly learn Biltmore history, protocols products/services.
6. Proactive, exercises good judgement; builds positive and professional relationships.
7. Positively and professionally represents Biltmore at all times.
Physical Requirments:
Physical Requirements:
1. Standing & walking for significant amounts of time; climbing flights of stairs.
2. Temperatures both inside and outside of Biltmore house can be extreme. Hosts must be able to adapt to constantly varying conditions.
3. Radio ear piece must be worn at all times while on duty.
4. Lifting up to 20 pounds on occasion.
