Summary

Responsible for sorting and shelving library books and materials.  Also, responsible for assisting the library staff in performing related customer service and clerical work.

Pay Range: $13.88 -$17.10 (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Work Schedule: 19 hour weeks comprised of four 4-hour days and one 3-hour day, with work occurring either in the mornings or afternoons.

  • Saturday work included in schedule

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Retrieve items and return materials to their appropriate place on the shelves, according to alphabetical or numeric filing.

  • Straighten shelves and check for proper order.

  • Locate missing items.

  • Sort materials and lift book bins.

  • Transfer library materials from book carts to appropriate locations.

  • Assist in unloading books from van.

  • Assist in lifting, moving, and setting up heavy items such as computer equipment or furniture.

  • Distribute periodicals, newspapers and mail to appropriate locations.

  • Pull old periodicals for discarding, recycling and/or resale.

  • Check-in and trace materials using a computerized system.

  • Provide basic level assistance for library users and refer users to appropriate library staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth grade

  • At least 16 years of age

  • Ability to file accurately by alphabet and numbers

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:     

  • Some experience in a library environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • General knowledge of standard filing systems

  • Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal Classification system

  • Skill to operate a computer keyboard to enter and retrieve information regarding books and materials

  • Ability to understand and implement oral and written directions 

  • Ability to drive a box truck

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license
