General Summary
- The Surgical Technologist Intern (STI) functions to utilize clinical skills and didactic knowledge in a clinical, employment capacity. The STI will be eligible for hire during their final semester of required clinical experience. During working shifts, they will work in conjunction with a mentor to perform skills for which they have been validated.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- STIs function as a Surgical Technologist performing skills for which they have been validated. This includes care for patients in the Operating Room under the direct supervision of the circulating nurse, surgical technologist and physician.
- STI under direct supervision perform basic operating room functions including:
- Scrubbing
- Gowning and gloving
- Basic Aseptic Technique
- Basic instrumentation and set-ups
- Positioning and Draping
- Limited to 1st scrubbing experience with direct supervision during passing of instruments
- STI under direct supervision assists in setting up individual cases using doctor’s preference cards as a reference utilizing appropriate instruments and prosthetic devices.
- STI applies medical technology of anatomy and physiology correctly.
- STI meets commitments, accepts accountability, handles change, stays focused under pressure, and meets attendance/punctuality requirements. Keeps information organized and accessible, maintains clean/functional work space, works systematically/efficiently, and manages time well.
- STI performs delegated tasks as directed to maintain quality and enhance patient safety under the direct supervision of the participating surgeon.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required. Currently in an accredited Surgical Technologist Program.
Work Experience
- Entry level role. No experience required.
Certification/License
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
