SUMMARY

The Tree Trimmer is based in the Landscape Management Section of the General Services Department and is responsible for providing technical assistance in all aspects of Tree Maintenance operations to maintain and preserve trees in the rights-of-way.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate as crew member in pruning and removal of various size trees (up to 100 ft.) in a safe manner.

  • Properly and safely operate arboriculture equipment, including:

  • Chainsaws

  • Stump grinder

  • Wood chipper

  • Bucket trucks of varying heights

  • And other related tree maintenance equipment.

  • ·Maintain (clean, sharpen, make minor repairs) assigned tools and equipment.

  • ·Assist daily in all ground operations including operating various tree maintenance equipment, chipping brush, flagging traffic, operating lowering ropes, and cleaning up job site.

  • Knowledgeable in all safety procedures for both equipment and personnel.

  • Comply with all safety rules so that all jobs and tasks are performed in a safe manner according to City safety policies, COOT, NCDOT, and OSHA regulations. Ensures job site and work zone are in accordance with WATCH handbook and DOT regulations for traffic safety.

  • May be required to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.

  • Participate in the emergency on-call program (includes nights and weekends).

  • Perform other duties as requested.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Arboriculture experience with knowledge in tree identification and maintenance.

  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) with the ability to prepare accurate daily work reports.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with others.

  • Ability to execute tasks with attention to detail.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent

  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of products, equipment, and methods relating to arboriculture, horticulture or other related fields.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
