HIRING RATE: $18.00/hour

JOB SUMMARY

The primary responsibilities of the Field Supervisor are to provide on-site supervision and assist the Recreation Coordinator-Programs with preparation for youth and adult sports, special events, and projects as assigned. This position works an average of 30 hours per week year-round, with evenings and weekends required.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity.  Their work schedule is based on business need.  This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities):

  • Serve as on-site liaison for program coaches, volunteers, participants, and officials. 
  • Responsible for daily check ins for programs, activities, and events.
  • Distribute and maintain all necessary forms, paperwork, and attendance records of participants.
  • Problem-solve, communicate, and mediate any issues that arise between participants, staff, officials, and the general public.
  • Follow through with rain-out policy as needed; cancel programs, activities, or events on-site when necessary, update weather hotline as appropriate, and update immediate supervisor.
  • Responsible for proper field/facility preparation and set up
  • Attend to accidents and emergency/crisis situations as needed.
  • Consult with supervisor on City, department, division, and program policies and procedures.
  • Be available for pre-season staff and participant meetings and any additional program meetings.
  • Report pertinent information, including scores, incidents, etc., to immediate supervisor at the conclusion of each shift, or sooner if the situation demands immediate attention.
  • Assist in the on-site enforcement of policies and rules, emphasizing safety and sportsmanship, including officiating games as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned

HOURS OF WORK

  • Afternoons, evenings, & some weekends according to season

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Inventory and maintain all program equipment
  • Distribute and inventory team shirts to participants
  • Work cooperatively with all individuals within the program, as well as other divisions and areas
  • Maintain on-going communication with immediate supervisor regarding program status
  • Assume scorekeeper, coach, and officiating responsibilities as needed

Supervision Received:

  • The Field Supervisor receives supervision from the Recreation Coordinator-Sports.

Supervision Provided:

  • The Field Supervisor provides supervision to coaches and assists in maintaining community partnerships by serving as a City representative for programs, activities, and events.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Experience:

  • Experience working with a wide array of populations and/or conditions
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Experience in recreation programs, athletics, or related areas such as recreation, physical education or coaching is preferred

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain before the start of the season
  • Criminal background check is required

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prefer experience with computers, and other types of office equipment
  • Knowledge of rules and activities for a variety of sports or drive to learn rules to support staff
  • Ability to work with a wide array of populations and/or conditions
  • Ability to deal with emergency/crisis situations
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible as a Recreation Division team member

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Body Positions

  • Must be able to bend, kneel, stoop and reach in a variety of settings and situations

Lifting and Carrying

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment that may weigh up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to assist in moving items that weigh a maximum of 50 pounds with assistance

Pushing and Pulling

  • Must be able to push and pull equipment to set up for activities, this may include setting up and moving tables, chairs, and other supplies

Hearing

  • Must be able to successfully communicate with staff and patrons via phone, email, and in person

Vision

  • Must be able to obtain written information from memos, letters, reports and to enter data onto spreadsheets
  • Must be able to observe class participants, officials, and other employees

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Mathematics

  • Must have a basic computation skills for calculating participation numbers, scores, etc.

Language Ability

  • Must be able to understand and interpret policies, procedures and regulations
  • Must be able to communicate professionally to supervisor, community members, and participants

Reasoning

  • Must make decisions on a day-to-day basis regarding program issues and interactions with staff, co-workers, and participants
  • Must be able to make sound judgments in emergency/crisis situations, and in a variety of situations

Remembering

  • Must remember details of schedules and standard operating procedures
  • Must retain information for purposes of follow-up with participant/supervisor requests
  • Maintain an attitude of consistency with customer service situations and in imparting the philosophy of the division and the department

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is primarily performed in park settings
  • Work occurs in various weather conditions and require a high level of physical exertion
  • Work involves frequent distractions, interruptions, and noisy settings
  • Works includes consistent interaction with participants, co-workers, and subordinate staff
  • Work requires an adaptive and flexible schedule

Pay Range

$15.76-$19.29
