HIRING RATE: $18.00/hour
The Quail St Recycling Center is a staffed location for dropping off sorted recyclables with many customers recycling at any given time. Site attendants must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to prioritize and perform multiple important duties quickly. The work environment is fast-paced and labor intensive.
There are typically 1 to 3 work shifts scheduled per week, and the center is open and staffed Monday through Saturday. Work shifts are typically 9:15 am to 4:15 pm, resulting in a 7 hour shift. There are several major holidays during which the center is closed.
The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Provide 7-10 essential functions, prioritized according to importance and/or frequency)
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Independently, and as a team, manage site operations and ensure safety
Be able to prioritize and perform important job duties in a fast-paced environment
Interact with every customer entering center with a helpful, friendly attitude
Respectfulness in responding to customer questions, concerns, and criticisms
Able to respectfully de-escalate and manage disgruntled customers
Work together with other recycling team members cooperatively, being open to constructive suggestions and other team members’ work styles
Educate recyclers verbally, with displays, and by handing out educational flyers
Helpful, friendly attitude with contractors, vendors and other City of Lakewood staff
Manually assist customers in sorting and recycling when physical assistance is requested
Load, operate and monitor the compactors
Perform limited mechanical duties
Move trash to designated locations
Coordinate timing of switching out of rolloff containers with recycling contractors
Report any worker and public safety issues and equipment malfunctions immediately and otherwise communicate often with supervisor
Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all necessary times as provided
Attend staff meetings, scheduled most often before the shift, and read and respond to work email
Attend training and perform online training on work-related topics
Able to use work email and perform Internet searches as requested by supervisor
Able to use Windows operating system on a desktop or laptop computer
Able to learn and use work scheduling software and other City software programs
Keep recycling center tidy and clean
Clean the office and shed on a regular basis
Perform other duties as assigned, including City of Lakewood Earth Day booth staffing, creating displays, and performing presentations at offsite locations and tours at the center. Presentations and tours are infrequent and not all site attendants will perform them.
Physical demands include, but are not limited to: continuous loading of cardboard compactors, which involves crouching and picking up large handfuls, turning and lifting into compactor; lifting up to 40 lbs without assistance; lifting materials overhead; continuous standing, moving and walking on uneven and sometimes slippery and icy surfaces; using hands to finger, handle, feel; stooping, kneeling, crouching; able to work year-round in inclement weather (heat, cold, precipitation, wind) on pavement; manual snow and ice removal with a shovel, snow blower and ice melt
Self-directed independent work with supervisor off site. Two site attendants staff each shift and must communicate and work well as a team due to many job duties and customers.
