Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing coordination activities related to patient scheduling and performing tasks and support functions under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

Job Description

Job Duties/Essential Functions

  • Job Duties
    • Receives and handles telephone communications accurately and timely
    • Coordinates scheduling patients
    • Completes data entry from procedural records in an accurate and timely fashion
    • Implements changes and assists with revisions on patient orders and requests
    • Organizes and prioritizes daily work effectively.
    • Receives and directs visitors within the department as indicated
    • Navigates the electronic medical record efficiently, orders procedures and locates documentation as necessary
    • Promotes a positive and professional image, collaborates with healthcare team including physicians, nurses and discharge planners
    • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.


Department Specific Duties

OR

  • Coordinates scheduling for Digestive Health after hours
  • Calls in staff for emergency cases as indicated
  • Refers conflicts and procedural questions to Nurse Manager/Charge RN
  • Responds to real/potential problems based on urgency related to surgery schedule
  • Reviews and updates surgery schedules daily
  • Utilizes computer system to run requested reports for physicians, administration and quality initiatives

Professional Experience

  • Two years of health care and/or secretarial experience preferred
  • Strong computer skills required

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Medical Assisting Diploma, Associate of Applied Science Degree preferred
  • Medical Terminology strongly preferred

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • American Heart Assocation Basic Life Support (BLS) required as specified per department guidelines listed above.
